Scenario 1: Down Bird

Post by derwho »

I feel like a retard but I cannot understand on how to complete the scenario. I'm supposed to do something to the "Aircraft Wreck" to gain enough points to score a Win on the scenario but I cannot figure out what I'm meant to do.

Any help.. ?

I'm having the exact same problem. I loaded the marines up as cargo into the choctaw and dropped them right on top of the wreckage, nothing happens. I get no messages after the one ordering a shootdown of all overflying aircraft.

Edit: you can ignore the wreckage, you only get score from sinking subs and ships, which isn't super hard either.

Does anyone know why there is a KC-135 tanker with no loadout orbiting the Gulf of Benin?

It's to big to land at Banak and there is no other Player air base so presumably the plan is that it just continues to fly around in circles off West Africa until it crashes from fuel exhaustion. Nice feature.

Sounds like someone tried to add the Tanker to Banak since it doesn't fit the game placed the unit at 0'0' Lat/Long and they didn't go down and delate it.

I'm lost as well. There is a helo with marines on board but I can't seem to figure out how to unload them on top of the wreckage. That seems to be the point of the scenario. I'm open to any hints as to how to prosecute this scenario. The rest seems fairly straightforward.

Just had a look in the editor, as I really got confused and a bit bored while playing. You only get points for detecting the aircraft wreck and sinking Soviet ships and subs. I found the scenario a bit unpolished and confusing. The Soviet landing message is triggered by any Soviet ship that enters the 'threat zone' which is very far away from the islands (and you can also edit it since the RPs aren't locked). This confused me while playing as I thought I missed something. The scenario description states that it lasts 1 day when the scenario lasts 2 days. The briefing mentions the British Scimitars being able to refuel the F-104's when this is not possible. And of course the random tanker that was already mentioned.

I am disappointed with this DLC and "unpolished" is a pretty good description of the problems. In addition to the issues articulated above I have been unable to land the US Marines by helo and the Norwegian Marines, which orders state are already on the island, don't actually exist. Using some of the Centaur Group ASW reference points for the CAP prosecution zones prevents effectively rationalizing these enormous (as in much too big) areas and the best thing to do before starting the game is to just delete all missions and then moving the reference points around to create more reasonable-sized areas.

The 1000+ square mile ASW zone for the Norwegian diesel boat and at best, a pair of Grumman Albatross' is just plain silly given that there is not even any randomization in her placement.

All in all, Down Bird is what one might expect from a first-time scenario author who's ideas exceeded his CMO design skills and not from a paid for DLC. Am planning to move on from this scenario but have little anticipation that things will improve as the scenario scale and complexity ramp up, assuming that they actually do.
