Falklands 13 - Call for Fire 12/6/82

Post by fitzpatv »

This is a slightly modified version of one of the Standalone Scenarios, covering the attack on the DDG Glamorgan by a shore-based Exocet launcher while she was engaged in fire support tasks during the fighting for the Two Sisters hills above Port Stanley. Repetition or not, it was a significant-enough event to merit inclusion in the DLC. You can only play the British side.

Glamorgan starts about 18nm offshore, which is beyond her 114mm guns’ range. Twelve platoons of Royal Marines are deployed ashore, with a couple of forward observer squads out-front and a battery each of 105mm guns, 81mm mortars and Milan ATGMs in reserve.

Argentine forces consist entirely of ground units, with some AMX-13 light tanks, AAV-7 APCs and infantry platoons, supported by 155mm guns, 81mm mortars, AA and light SAMs. It is thought that they might be preparing a counter-attack.

The scenario takes place at night, starting at 1am local time.

12/6/82 01:00L: I moved Glamorgan inshore and, without much confidence in it, sent-up her Wessex chopper to spot (it also carries some ATGMs). Before long, an Argentine platoon was spotted by the forward observers. It was too far away for Glamorgan to engage and the 105mm howitzers have a lengthy OODA loop, but the latter got the job done for 10VP.

Some AMX-13s then appeared and destroyed a Marine platoon, levelling the scores. Glamorgan and the 105s then exacted retribution for 30VP. The darkness hindered spotting and another enemy infantry platoon disappeared before it could be bombarded.

02:00L: Some AAV-7s arrived and were disposed-of for another 30VP, then another infantry platoon for 10 more. Scores over +50 are enough for a Minor Victory. Another three infantry platoons and a second AA-7 were then dealt-with in exchange for one platoon of Marines, taking the total over +100 for a Major Victory. Glamorgan had positioned herself behind a small island which, she hoped, would block any Exocet fire.

06:00L: Another Argentine platoon was flushed-out and eliminated to take the final score to +130 and a Major Victory. Neither the enemy artillery nor their Exocet launcher were detected or fired.

Overall, Britain lost 8 ground elements and Argentina 33.

Not especially interesting or realistic, but it completed the historical Falklands scenarios. That leaves two bonus scenarios, which I will play after the next Mediterranean Fury one. After that, I’ll be looking for something else to accompany the Fury series. I’m leaning towards running through the Command Live scenarios, which I’ve had for ages and (with the exception of Black Gold Blitz as the Saudis) have yet to play. However, if anyone has any requests, I’ll consider them.
