A.I. units behaviour...

Post by totola »

I made a little engagement, from a table wargame scenario: for the A.I. troops, i must always set the waypoints? (the victory exes are "Exit" type, for the advancing side)
And the defending A.I. troops? How to keep positions?
Thnks

No, waypoints are not always necessary. My first test of a scenario is always AI vs AI, so I can watch how each side moves. If the side which will be the AI side is too off-beat, I will set waypoints for them, but usually I let the computer decide what it wants to do. It will often move differently in each play, so adds an element of randomness if someone plays the scenario more than once.

As for defenders, leave them set at "Defend 0,0" and they will stay where they are until the AI considers it necessary to move them to defend the objective hexes - usually toward the end of the fight. (This creates some nice "counter-attack" situations.)
Retreat is NOT an option.

You can also set AI unit's reaction turn to 99, this should keep it sitting still. Another possibility is edit speed to zero, but this creates problems. While testing for new MC I encountered units that had moved even though their movement was zero, this resulted them being in a 'stuck' situation...they were inteded to cover certain approaches but as they had mysteriously turned that approach was now wide open...

After some pondering we figured out that the unit had tried to flee, so the AI had turned it towards the hex it wanted to flee to but only then checked for movement, found it zero and stopped the unit...
