[CRM] Combine Reskin Mod > Discussion

Post by Gters »

PREMISE: Witp AE continues to be a very popular and widely followed game. Many modders created an impressive number of mods (see images below and imagine the game in this version) since UV came out, then WITP, etc.
Unfortunately, much of this work has been lost, and the only way to get it back online is for you to share it, starting with UV, moving on to WPO, and finally Witp AE. Alternatively, there is another way that I am following, which has allowed me to download some of those files from sites that no longer work.

PROJECT: I would like to have a team, reorganize all that work, reuse it, and create a restored version of WITP AE. We can change pretty much anything in the game and make it much more beautiful and up-to-date. I am sure that the game would find new life and entice even old players to play it.

GOALS: In chronological order, I would like to share all the files I have recovered online on Discord (as I am already doing and dividing them into categories), then select the best ones, edit them where possible (for example > planesides), and create the best version of the game, completely redoing the graphics and sound as well.

DISCORD: Join the CRM's server and help grow the project >>> https://discord.gg/NVhy3Msnx6

There is already a Discord area for WITP:AE.

So what? Do you think that, if the project were to go ahead, that single channel on Discord would be enough to organize such a task?

No. You need a dedicated server with specific sections ;)

Obviously, I assume you've never organized an online project and are thinking of doing so on an official game server where you don't have permission to create new channels, have private areas for team members, etc.
Strange, actually Discord has thousands of channels, many of which are based on a single game or mod, so these are similar to my idea.
That said, you're free to do as you please. Bye

Today I managed to save these files from a website that no longer works. It would have been a real shame to lose them forever...

I've created a Discord channel for my mod called Combine Reskin Mod
I invite you to join and participate. I have saved everything I could from the work done by modders over the last 20+ years, starting with Uncommon Valor, and I intend to share all this incredible work done by modders and, where possible, improve it...

Is that split island graphic supposed to be Guadalcanal upside down? (looks like Savo Island on the bottom left and the other islands on the far left could be where Tulagi is). If so, it should be flipped so the bottom of the island is at the top (North) end to make it less confusing to players.

Honestly, I have no idea. This image is part of a project created by a modder. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
My first goal was to save everything worth saving that modders have published over the last 20+ years. Then I started sharing these files on Discord (see attached images and link above) so that they could be easily shared. Finally, I would like to create a super-mod using some of these works to make the game look amazing.

I have shared these and other files on my Discord (Link >>> https://discord.gg/NVhy3Msnx6 ) so that you can download them, with the intention of sharing ALL of the hundreds of files I have found on various forums/sites.

So i am sharing all the files in my possession, divided by category and file name (for example A_AirBombardamente_512.bmp) as pic below, with attached image previews and so that you can choose the ones you like best.

The game will become much more beautiful to look at ;)

Added a poll to the first comment...

I fully agree with you, Gters. A single Discord channel is simply not sufficient for a project of this scale. If you want to organize graphics, sounds, historical references, interface elements, and different mod versions properly, you need a dedicated server with clearly structured and logically separated sections.
A combine reskin that merges material and work from numerous modders requires a stable structure so that everything remains traceable and everyone can work efficiently.

I am already a member of the Combine Reskin Mod channel, and I find it excellent that I no longer have to search the entire Matrix forum or old threads just to find a single picture, map, or sound effect. A central, well-organized archive saves a huge amount of time, prevents duplicated effort, and ensures that valuable resources do not get lost in outdated uploads.

Due to my professional background, I know very well how important functioning structures, clear responsibilities, and well-thought-out organization are. This is exactly what the approach presented by Gters provides.
A project of this magnitude can only be successful when the foundation is solid: clear folders, defined work areas, traceable processes, and one place where everything comes together.

I consider this approach absolutely correct, and I am very glad to see it being implemented in such a professional way. If any additional support is needed, I’m happy to help.

Avanti così – keep going!

Thanks, Piper. In fact, the first step is to gather all the mods published so far. I looked at every thread on uv, witp, etc. forums, as well as websites, some of which had expired domains but were resurrected thanks to a page called Way Machine. I saved all the ones that could be downloaded, and I will publish them on Discord, divided into categories, with a preview and installation instructions, so that any player can choose what suits them best for their game.
This does not preclude me from also working to save what can be saved (such as a beautiful navalcombat_1024 taken from a screenshot) and on the rest of the project.
That's why an important part of the project is sharing your files, as you may have some mods that I don't have. For example, on the Spooky UV page, the 2003 archive does not work, so hundreds of files can no longer be downloaded, and the same goes for many links here on the forum.
Regarding Discord, I agree, it is absolutely impossible to use a single channel to manage such a large amount of work to discuss and/or publish... It would be too distracting and not very functional ;)

I'm thinking of changing the color of some Japanese ship icons (see attached pics) to make them more easily recognizable during gameplay. What do you think? Do you like it?

I don't plan to change the allied ones, which already have a mix of many colors, because I think it would make everything much more chaotic.

Here's some work we've completed (thare are more downloadable on discord) in the last few days. We've focused primarily on saving files that were only available online as screenshots, or on sites with expired domains and objects (ships, planes, text, etc.) that were therefore unusable.

Do you like them? ;)

FWIW, I already created a mod of all the mods and made them all JSME compatible. Made a dropbox link etc.

I think there is over 50 mods I converted to JSME format.

Very interesting, I didn't know that. Now I'll download the folders and see if there's anything I haven't published on my Discord server, which is basically complete with all the files and mods. In fact, I'll be making an announcement here soon.
You (and anyone else) are welcome there, even if you just want to help us with the mod :)

PS - There are some mods that I couldn't find for WPO or WITP, for example this one https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopic.php?t=414054... Do you happen to have them saved on your HD?
