bridge destruction

Frank Hunter's Campaigns on the Danube is an operational study of the campaigns along the Danube in 1805 and 1809. Campaigns on the Danube's system focuses on trying to present the player with the same sort of decisions placed on their historical counterparts; how to feed an army and move that army according to a plan, all the while trying to fight a campaign. There is also an option to allow players to play out the battles with miniatures and input the results.

bridge destruction

Post by Treefrog »

Query: bridge destruction messages basically report damage at "hex 17, 13 (#)". The # is a number between 3 and 18 (in my experience). Sometimes the damaged bridges have a red "x" at each bank but usually they don't. I have no recollection of seeing anyone cross a bridge hexside with a red "x" on each bank, so I assume those bridges are down. I am guessing that the # is the amount of destruction, presumably cumulative; when the cumulative damage exceeds some number (anybody know what it is), I assume the bridge collapses.

For me, cavalry seems the most effective bridge "destroyer". I have noticed that if the unit doesn't make progress within a few days, it never seems to make any progress. I have not noticed that sending more than one unit to destroy the bridge either expedites the progress or enhances the probability of success.

I haven't tried destroying a bridge from both ends simultaneously (for obvious reason [;)], but wonder if anybody has tried this?

Bridge destruction is a critical science for the Austrians; it can really funnel the French into a circumscribed area, which is helpful 'cause the Austrians are not the premier marching/reaction force now, are they [8|].

the red "x" means the bridge is down. The # you refer to is the damage inflicted by the destruction attempt.

Just out of interest, is it possible to repair/replace a bridge.

Yes, with your single bridge engineer unit attached to your army HQ

Hmm! How long should it take to destroy a bridge?

I have just had my Engineers and two cavalry regiments working on the bridges at Ulm Donauworth and Linz for about seven turns without seeing any result. Do you get a message when they have finished or some other visible record that the bridge has been blown?

The units say they are engaged in Demolish Bridge stance and I clicked on the hexside with the bridge when I issued the order but nothing seems to be happening.[&:]

That's a long time. you should have got a popup saying the bridge was destroyed or be seeing a red X. If you have a save of it I'll check it.

No sorry, I have since played a whole French Campaign so any saved games are long gone.

However, next time I play Austrian I shall keep a check on things and let you know if it happens again.

As a general observation I didn't notice any issues when I played French and yet I was getting a lot of Range Check Errors playing Austrian.

The only range error I know about is when sending supplies to the centre of operations using full fog. If you get one at any other time please let me know on the support forum, and what you were doing when it happened and keep the autosave if possible.
Thanks!

Will do.

I certainly get a lot when playing Austrian. One normally pops up when I order the Engineer unit to destroy a bridge and in the last game I got one during a battle which locked the game and forced me to CTRL-ALT-DEL and reload from the auto-save.

I shall start taking snapshots of when they occur and saving the game for your perusal.
