None of Matrix games are for the consoles so you will not see it with WaW... I'm curious, what type of turn based (emphasis on turn based) military strategy console games have Japanese companies put out?

Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military I currently one going to be released for xbox. Has been in japan for a year. How is the next generation going to get hooked on turn based. Live enviroment would open up so much online play with cheat free and stats Imagine the compitions that you could have. If panzer general was a great succes pc and console why cant this game.. Would be nice on big screen kicked back on the couch running strategy to control the world.[X(]

PTO huh?....I had forgotten about the whole line of KOEI games....they had some fairly good ones, Le Empeuer, Ghengis Khan, Nobunga's (sic) Ambition ect...but even that company has gone the way of martial arts fight sims, and I think they only have kept their Romance of the Three Kingdoms series alive....

PTO 4 was released in feb of 03. And naval ops this year by koei. If you look at the specs of the next so called consoles really they are becoming gaming systems. It would be my sincer hope that the all time great grigsby would come to the live arena. I thought I would never be saying something like this being a die hard pc gamer myself. But pc ing is to hard for most and makeing a game run more difficult and online. Plus hackers viruses steeling your info. Xbox is already selling map pack add ons wich in the strategy world would be good for guys like wild bild to earn some money. Alot of hard work goes in these games and the playability is good. I can remember the wargamer clubs in school. I had hoped that avalon hill would have done better in the pc the battle of jutland would have been a good one converted...I am not a very good war gamer but I have not ever let that stop me...everyone in here could stomp the thunder out of me, that has never changed my love for it.
to me world war 2 is turned based because that is all we had at first. I rember my dad teaching me to play bismark by avalon hill. That was my first strat. All people think these games look neat but they find it difficult so how can they be brought in. Not in to space stuff or fantasy myself just millitary...havent seen a good civil war game in long time.

Unless we (2by3 or Matrix) find a company or programmer interested in converting the game to Xbox, it's not going to happen. My experience with turn based strategy wargames on video systems is limited to Panzer General on Playstation many years ago. Dai Senryaku (the original) was a great game on some video game systems in Japan and I'd believe there is a market for certain turn based wargames in Japan. The subject matter of GGWaW makes me think that there would be some interest in Japan, but I doubt a console manufacturer would be interested in such a game for the US market. In the eighties and nineties, if they didn't approve, you couldn't make your game. I assume this is the same with Xbox, but I admit I haven't kept up with this. Anyone out there have any idea, and more importantly, any Japanese companies interested in seeing GGWaW on a console system?

Must admit would be great to see this on x-box. I still play panzer general on playstation as it is nice sitting back on lounge
for a change rather than at a PC. However to be realistic I doubt the market would be there for this type of game to make it economical to produce.
Please prove me wrong though.

It might turn out to be far easier than that. When I was in Redmond two years ago one of the things Microsoft laid out was their long term plans for dominance in the console space. LONG TERM planning is something MS has always dominated on. Simply put there are ways to accomplish market dominance without necessarily even having the best box. (ie. make games easier to develop for the XBOX2 so much so that less even develop for the other platforms)

This was essentially one of the main reasons on the server side Novell died to Microsoft. It was just far easier to make server applications for Microsoft than Novell.

So we will have two ways:
1. "The graphic chip will be based on the R520 (codenamed Fudo). This VPU has been in design at ATI’s Marlborough, Mass. office. It'll be fully compatible with DirectX 9's PS and VS 3.0 and the next version of DirectX: DX10, the same suite of APIs that will be used in Longhorn. "
2. Microsoft recently bought Virtual PC and most think its a lousy purchase since it pails in comparison to VMware (for Server stuff). But that isn't why Microsoft bought it. There are two other reaons, the one that applies here it that since it gives the ability to run WINDOWS APPS on a PowerPC it could fit well into one of the next XBOX platforms. So essentially a "Windows Emulator" for the XBOX2 or XBOX3. It would of course not be a full emulator and since the hardware would be fixed it could be very stable and pretty much hide the whole OS-layer and just expose the individual games.

So equivelant API's and DirectX or just Full Emulation. There won't be one but two paths to easily port games to XBOX (and most likely XBOX only). So I wouldn't waste much time now thinking about Console Development for Wargames. Within a few years time it will be probably be a no-brainer.

I'd be curious to see if a title like 'World at War' could be successful on the Xbox.

It won't happen as long as Microsoft takes their huge cut on each unit sold and they insist on huge initial order quantities. The economics just don't make sense for any wargame.

I agree, they should develop a different strategy for niche games

Miocrosoft has very little interest in niche titles at all.
