Screen flash

Post by ReDorDeD »

Nice game, bought the digital download version the other day, like the physics engine.
Having a minor problem with the graphics though. Right from the time the game is started, including when displaying the logos, the screen flashes every few seconds. This is both in the menus and in the 3d areas of the game. Any ideas how to stop it?
I've attached the dxdiag report.

Welcome to Starshatter!

OK, standard questions: do you have the latest vidcard drivers?
Once you get into the game, check the video options settings, is it on DX7? Change (either from DX7 to software or vice versa) it to that and restart SS.
Let us know what happens.

I had the latest nvidia drivers a couple of weeks back, but knowing them they are probably an issue or two out of date by now[8|]
The vid setting are on Dx7 at the moment, I have tried the software but obviously I'd prefer to use the quality available from the graphics card. It flashes in both modes.

The graphics drivers are definitely up to date, and I have tried both the Dx7 and software modes. There are screen flickers in both modes. I don't get flicker in any other games or applications on my system, anyone got any ideas?

Um....not sure what else to try; what color depth are you running in? 16 or 32?

What other programs do you have running at the same time as Starshatter. I've seen the screen flicker myself sometimes when I have my mail client running in the background.

I tend to cancel everything before running a game except EzAntivirus. It only allows a suspend. I'll go into msconfig and kill it all and reboot, see it that helps.

Seems to have done the trick. Used MSConfig and killed all startup programs, then switched on the ones I want to run one at a time. Not sure what the offender was yet........but I've got antivirus, steam, mouse & keyboard support working and no screenflash anymore, yay!
Thank-you Milo for responding to this post. It is very nice to see that you take the time to support your users.
Starshatter is ace - I just keep getting more addicted, can't wait for v4.5.
Keep up the good work.

Have you run spybot or Adaware recently?
I know my old comp was packed to the brim with spyware and things started refusing to run and it was far slower than it should have been. A couple scans cleared most of that up. I finally got a virusscan and firewall installed on it so it's fairly safe from the internet, at least, not from my two bothers (spelling intentional).

[EDIT:] Note, 'adaware' and 'spybot' above are links to download pages for the respective programs

i can Highly Recomend www.Spybot.info just make sure you run the updates for it as well as they dont keep the download version uptodate unless there has been some radical change in the program. Thats an odd problem u had there but i guess if you had an icon in the bakground that was fhasingaway merrly to its self mabey that would cause problems, i have a similar thing with msn when it popsup

I already have adaware and spybot, but I've probably disabled them now [8|]
I'd better make sure they are still loading up!!

It's not the loading up so much as running weekly scans with them. I've personally taken to running either adaware, spybot or virusscan before I leave for class in the morning. That's a little excessive, but it means nothing accumulates on my compy, keeping it running nice: clean and fast.
