Is Napoleonic Grogism needed?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Ok, my background is probably typical of a lot of gamers... Started with SPI and AH titles way back in the day, and am now mostly a computer gamer.

I cut my teeth on SPI's Napoleon at Waterloo, and have played AH's War & Peace, some of the other SPI operational titles (the Napoleonic quads) and recently enjoyed Age of Napoleon by Renaud Verlaque, a very interesting strategic level Nappy board game with some very nice components.

I've read a little about the era, but I'm much more versed in the American Civil War and WWII. Not much in the way of computer games about the Napoleonic era have caught my eye (the exception being Age of Sail sims). I enjoy GGWAW, and CoG looks interesting enough that I might plunk down the scratch for it.

I'm curious as to the nature of CoG: It seems like a strat game with operational battle resolution. That is obvious, but what is the focus of the game? Is the strategic game the thing, with the operational battles kind of a side dish (ala GGWAW) or is the operational aspect more important than in other strategic games? How heavily do diplomacy and economics weigh in? Is it a multiplayer game with a bonus AI feature, or is it a game that is primarily designed around solitiare play with MP kind of a bonus feature. How long does a game take to complete? What is the time scale per turn?

I know this has probably been hashed out before, but now that the game has gone gold, perhaps it might be a good time for restating the vital stats about CoG. A lot of lurkers like me might be looking for a quick and dirty description of CoG, and while there are a lot of very specific items discussed in the various threads (uniforms, leader getting killed, etc) I don't see a FAQ or a short summary of the vital stats of the game.

Is it a game for Nappy grogs, or something more general that the more casual gamer can get in to?

It´s for both worlds. I personally am not a Napoleonic age nut, not at all. But I really enjoy the little bit I played so far. It´s the options and the strategic/dimplomatic possibilities I really like.

Agree 100%, I'm a Napoleonic age nut and despite the uniforms problems[;)] I have discover one of the most interesting wargame

Well, some of your questions are answered in the game description on the official site:

"Turns at the strategic level correspond to one month of game time; turns on the tactical level correspond to twenty minutes of game time."

"Playing Time. A moderate sized detailed battle takes about 30 minutes real time for the player to resolve. Larger battles at the climax of a campaign may take several hours of real time to complete."

The playing time listed is for the tactical battles, but you can imagine that if the large battles at the end of a campaign are taking several hours each, then a full game is going to take many hours to complete.
