Wittman's Coincidence

Post by tracer »

I tried the Wittman's Gamble scenario for the first time earlier tonight. Even though I ended up 2 hexes shy of the final VH (Tiger was immobilized by a suspension hit) the game gave me a decisive victory 2 turns later. When I added up the AFV's and APC's I destroyed it added up to 47.

Last weekend I caught that History Channel program about the Tiger; they decribed Wittman's attack that this scenario is based on, mentioning that it ended when his tank was disabled...but that he had knocked out 47 Allied armored vehicles first.

Maybe I should go grab a lottery ticket

Kind of sounds like what I described in another thread about playing the Speed Racer song. If only the KTiger had Pops Racer on the job it would've been fixed in no time flat, at least in time for the next KTiger races.

Tracer, was your Tiger stopped from a side/rear shot?

I read the book about WittMann, and if I don't remember it wrong, his Tiger was disabled by a rear or side shot that hit the engine. It was a Sherman coming from a side street, shooting through a building or something like that, while his groups of tanks were fighting with some tanks up front.
It was difficult fighting as it was inside a city, and Wittman went in without infantry support, just two other PzIV's I think, which were diabled just before Wittmann's own tank was disabled. He was close to a road junction he felt important to drive by before going home. The situation were described as very tense by both sides.
There is a very nice photo in the book of his Tiger and another Pz-IV where they were left by their crews at the side of the street.

The book makes for very interesting reading.
I don't remember well the Title ("Tiger Ace"?)
but it's from Schiffer publishing.
Well Recommended!!
I still remember vividly the section about him shooting up that whole convoy of tanks and trucks earlier that same day.

Did anyone else feel the "GOD" effect when he was firing in the scenario? Heck he was even taking out halftracks with his machine guns. I felt that he couldn't be beat. I wish all my tanks in my campagin game could be this good. In a campaign does anyone know if a tanker could be this good (ie with 2000000000 kills or such)?

MGs knocking out armor? Recently, on the same level, the AI had a Polish ATR open fire on a vehicle with 8 side armor, which I believe was the 251/1 HT, but in any case it did have that armor and was open-topped. The ATR shot missed and I breathed a sigh of relief, just waiting for the 3 or 4 more ATR shots to ring out after that. But instead, the next shot slayed this HT. Guess what it was? It was the secondary weapon for that ATR, A RIFLE, from about 250-300yds. And it WASN'T a vulnerable hit either! That rifle has no penetration, I checked. I was very careful that the pertinent information was correct: both units on the same level, the range, the weapon, the armor, and no vulnerable hits. Can't say I've ever seen this before.

I snuck around that triangular block just south of the VH and approached it from the rear (west?). One of the Cromwell's got into the wooded lot just above the VH and hit me with its 95mm, so it must have been a track shot; from there it probably had a pretty good aspect of the Tiger's side. My crew didn't bail so I was able to finish off the UK units that came rushing back toward me.

I also noticed the same thing Solo did: the Tiger destroyed an M3 halftrack with its MG. I was so surprised I checked to see if Wittman had jury rigged his Tiger with a captured 12.7mm (.50cal).

And Larry, you may wanna hold off on that lottery ticket: reason I haven't been here in a couple days was because my HD failed and I hadda reinstall everything. Guess my luck ran out
