SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Help getting this game running

Post by Adamo »

I've been playing SPWAW for years on my desktop pc and I've recently purchased a laptop that I want to play the game on. The specs of the laptop are A64 3200+, 512 Ram, Radeon mobile X200, etc. I've installed version 8.2 and in standard start I get the intro screens and then the screen goes blank. I searched the forums and came up empty. Can anybody help me out with this?

Hey Adamo.

I'll ask the standard "have you downloaded the latest video drivers" question. If no, then do that first. I never run the standard start cause I had similar problems the first time I ran it. Something doesn't work right. So I always use the quick start which has never given me a problem. You might want to try that if you haven't already.

Hope this helps.

I have latest video drivers and i have attempted to run via quick start and still nothing.
Could this be a service pack 2 issue?

Well, it does sound like a video issue--which is not good. Have you tried playing around with the compatibility mode under properties? If you right click on the Quick Start icon and select properties, then the compatibility tab, there are some options, such as running as Windows 95 mode or running in 256 colors or 640 x 480 resolution. Maybe one of those might work? You might also want to try deleting the steel.prf file in the SAVE directory just in case, cause that file can be problematic. Sorry I don't have a good video solution, but I haven't had to deal with them so I am less than an expert. Does anyone else have an idea that has actually troubleshot video problems?

Hi Adamo,

I have had the same problem with my laptop, too.

Have you tried to start the game with the MECH.exe directly? It is located in the main game's directory
It skips the intro and goes directly to the Menu Screen.

It worked.

Then I right clicked on it and made a link to my desktop.

Hope this help!

Mau Fox.
