BATTLE OF ARNHEM BASES

Post by *budd* »

Hello,
Haven't had much time to game these days [:@] in the process of moving , but did manage to get in a battle. I'm not even half way thru HTTR yet and this is the longest battle i've tried yet, working my way from smaller to larger. Played one battle part way thru on a higher order delay, boy was that a mess. So this will be on regular delay to once again get this lifetime hex based gamer familar with HTTR again. Feel free to comment good or bad on anything you see, if you guys can tear away from COTA to read this[:'(]. Yes COTA will be the next game i buy, love the system. Enjoy. will post more, soon i hope.

Hello,

The plan gets going.
1. 3rd BN Of the 6th is setting up defense at Northwest Hill.

2. 1st. BN of KG Hoffmann with 2 coys from 2nd BN race south toward EDE. 1st. BN is my most experienced unit, apparently the rest were throw together from a supply depot[:'(] figured i'd send them because they'll be farthest away from help, no idea what's waiting for them.

3. Thats the 6th Penal BN heading towards the crossroads. If they run into anything but some peaceful wildlife i don't expect them to hold.

4. Thats my Reserve, 1st and 3rd BN of the 6th. Nice roads north and south and a track to 5-heartbreak ridge. I feel there well placed.

5.That's the balance of 6th REG all over heartbreak ridge, they made good time and are setting up to defend.

6.Balance of KG Hoffmann Reg. heading towards the crossroads, they will be passing the DIV HQ which has been ordered to stay put.

I love it when a plan comes together, of course we know what happens to plans when that first shot is fired. No contact as of yet.

1. Looks like a herd of paras and suddenly those Penal Boys[:D] would rather be somewhere else, using arty on the crossroads to help them withdraw.

2. since there doesnt seem to be any action around Northwest Hill, i've widened the frontage and depth and thier reorging to comply with my orders.

3. Making good time towards EDE, no contact yet.

4.Kg Hoffmann busting ass to reach crossroads, hmmm i wonder how many more herds of paras are around.

About 3 1/2 hours in and things are starting to heat up.

1. I've pulled 3rd Bn of the 6th out of reserve and ordered them to get to the tree line and put some fire on the flank of those paras coming down the road.

2. A little earlier after seeing the reception i would be getting at the crossroads, i put the brakes on KG Hoffmann and set them to defend and get dug in post haste.

3. Contact in EDE, taskforce EDE was just switching to defend when contact was made.

Nothing else much going on. all quiet at heartbreak ridge, wonder why they call it that, i'm sure i'll find out[;)]

About 4hours later

1. I've pushed the defense of Northwest Hill out further too the main roads into Northwest hill. as a side note i'm thinking i may pull these 2 coys into my reserve pool if no contact is made in this area as all the contacts around the crossroads is already making me feel stretched thin.

2. The afore mentioned contacts, there has been alot of contacts poping in and out , alot of them heading south. Heartbreak Ridge?

3. a little recon sent out from heartbreak ridge.

4. I've ordered 1st BN , the last of my reserve to defend at the tree line, maybe get a look at whats coming down south from the crossroads.

5. EDE clear for the moment, the paras were chased out.

6. 3rd Bn very well placed to observe the crossroads and put fire on the paras, if the numbers are right i will attack into thier flank. The lack of experience of most of my units does give me pause thou.

Day 2 03:26

1. Heartbreak Ridge getting some action, i glad i sent 1st BN to that tree line, they found some action heading toward heartbreak ridge no doubt.

2. KG Hoffmann has been under assault off and on for a few hours now, there holding well. once again i'm glad also sent 3rd BN to the northern tree line. The only thing that worries me is that road [see arrow] they could get around me in the dark. I plan on readjusting the defend orders to get dug into the shitload of dykes in the area.

3. Reference pt. CROSSROADS

4. EDE -there have been intrusions into my perimeter all nite, going to shrink my perimeter to cut down on the surprises.

Day 2 07:46

1. i've pretty much given up all hope of attacking towards the crossroads, just hoping to get up into the dykes and hold on.

2. Here comes the pain, sizable force heading towards heartbreak ridge.

Not pictured: 4 companies [2 engineer/2 infantry] and a mortar platoon attacking EDE, no worries at the moment.

reinforcements could arrive at any time 6-12 day 2 , hope to regain the initiative then.

Day 2 14:40

Almost all my reinforcements are on the ground, 1 more load of 5 para units due by 18:00 south of EDE.

3. KG Hoffmann was under attack most of the nite and early morning, then nothing. the first cross appears on the map a anti tank platoon of thiers got a little to deep into my lines.

1. 3rd BN was in the tree line supporting KG Hoffmann[see yellow line] when the traffic dropped off from the crossroads i first sent a single coy to recon the crossroads and then the balance of 3rd to secure and defend the crossroads.

2. the 107th PZ Bde has ordered to move down the highway [fastest, quickest, aggro-high, rate of fire-rapid, losses high] this should clear the attacks on EDE from this direction and keep contact with the enemy, i want to keep contact and not let them dig in on the highway.

4. KG Hienke BN has been ordered to move down the track [fastest, quickest, aggro-med,rate of fire-normal, losses-med] to basically recon and keep my options open. Take the objective if not fortifide or go north and get behind what's been attacking Heartbreak ridge.

Day 2 17:17

1. remember that force i was worried about working its way around me up north, well there they are, gonna have to make some adjustments up north.

2. 107th PZ Bde is moving aggressively down the HW , they've cleared any threat to EDE , and now i just want them to keep contact and the pressure on the paras, so once the HW goes thru the trees they wont get to dig in, we'll see.

3. I'm moving a coy from defending northwest hill to a blocking position at a crossroads up north, in case that force keeps moving towards northwest hill.

4. Going to try to keep improving my defensive position by moving into the dykes by the DIV HQ.

5. the last of the reinforcements, 5 para units, ordered to move with all haste up north, form up and assault to the north.

In the blowup of heartbreak ridge- i had to cancel KG heinke move south order and put them to defend in support of the ridge.

Looks like the only place i have the initiative is down south on the HW.

Hope you enjoyed it so far, will continue as time allows. Goodnight

Day 2 23:07

1. the assault by the reinforcement BN stalled any breakthru by the allies, pretty much a stalemate in this area. the coy from northwest hill has reached its blocking position on the road and i'm still improving my defensive position in the dykes, i'll be happy with maintaining the status quo.

2. Ordered 1st Bn to move to the crossroads and defend, as i've given new orders to the BN at the crossroads, of course they've taken the opportunity to rest even thou there showing little fatigue.

3. I've ordered 3rd BN to leave the crossroads and move down the road to recon towards Otterloo woods objective, as there hasn't been much action at the crossroads.

4. Once the 107th had cleared the threat to EDE, i dispatched 2 coys down the rail line as i was expecting a visit from some of the paras pushed off the HW, turns out i was right.

5. 107th has been pushing hard down the HW trying to keep contact with the enemy but we've reached the part where the road goes thru the trees and the going has slowed alot, expecting flank attacks from those units pushed off the HW once they regroup.

Same time as above post Day 2 23:07

close up of heartbreak ridge.

There have been attacks all day, they attack fall back and attack again. Been holding pretty well with some local counter attacks. Here i've ordered KG heinke BN [which is not fatigued] during a lull in the action to reorg and attack down the track, the paras are fatigued and maybe i can regain the intiative in this area.

Day 3 13:25

Less than 24 hours left, the next four screens are all at the same time. The situation up north in the dykes is still status quo and will not be pictured.

South of EDE

more paras turn up, i'm just about to order the 2 coys into a delaying action. i've maxed out the losses, aggro, and rate of fire for the final blocking position.

Day 3 13:25

Otterloo woods objective:

3rd BN was ordered to attack from the south of the objective, but got held up. So i ordered 1st to move from the crossroads via the north road and form up and attack from the north. Of course since i removed them from the tree line by heartbreak ridge they've rested 4 times even thou they've shown no fatigue? they don't follow orders very well[:-]

Day 3 13:25

107th On the HW:

The 107th has been attacking down the HW all nite and morning, despite trying to keep contact with the enemy the paras still managed to delay and get dugin on the HW. As you can see progress has slowed to a crawl and along with the dug in positions on the HW they've been attacking the flanks also. The cross is one of my flack units which surrendered.

Day 3 13:25

Heart Break Ridge:

I ordered 2 units from the 107th [yellow x's] which were part of thier rear guard to go north and assist at the ridge. I've got KG heinke on the attack again, it's their 3rd try with the others being repulsed, the last attack was assisted by the 2 107th units. You can see i'm about to surround a unit of the 506th, there's 2 crosses on the map now, the southern one was a heavy machine gun platoon which surrendered during the last kg Hienke attack, it also marks the farthest the attack got before pulling back. The northern cross was an enemy infantry company that surrendered when i cut it off in a local attack.

Day 3 21:54

The only enemy contact is in the otterloo woods objective area, i own the objective now and one of thier units is in deep hurt right now, not shown is a little to the right of the objective an enemy mortar coy and engineer unit surrendered. they've pulled back up in the dykes and the attacks on heartbreak ridge have stopped, no sign of them around EDE either, the cross is an enemy mortar coy. The 107th hasn't made much progress, the enemy has pulled back, but i'm betting there's another blocking position waiting for me.
