Damage Porn?

Post by Perturabo »

Does anyone know any sims/wargames that realistically and graphically simulate damage to hardware? Especially ship sims?

Please don't google that term with adult search on. I would imagine the results might not be too appealing. The internet can be a dark world of sinister impulses beating with a digital heart.

As to your question, I still have yet to see decent damage textures/FX in many games. Even damage markers are usually replaced in game engines to save on memory resources. One game that at least simulated decent impact damage is the Silent Hunter series. It's so rewarding to see a ship's smoke stack or deck guns go flying in the air when a torpedo hits. The trail of black smoke in the sky, the debris in the water, it's all very convincing... still to this day.

Company of Heroes also has pretty good damage effects. Mortars and artillery rounds shape the earth with their impact, buildings can be set on fire or blown up. By the time a scenario in COH is over, the entire area usually looks like an orgy of blood, dirt, and broken tanks.

I find this desire a bit...um...peculiar, but SPWaW, with its great sound effects and images of AFVs brewing up satisfies my bloodthirst just fine. But, jeez, calling it "damage porn" seems to be going a bit overboard, doncha think? This doesn't help the image of a typical wargamer, does it? Care to explain this need, Perturabo?

I saw casts of Silent Hunter 5 where you could actually see the torpedo damage on the hull (underwater camera). AFAIK the breeches were more than eye candy.

"x porn" in internet slang it means showing off something gratifying in great amount of detail. For example "Jagged Alliance 2" is a "gun porn" because of the amount of real world guns it had.

I got a new computer and I wonder if there was any progress when it comes to it. It's not really bloodthirst because blood is already present in abundance.
I'm mostly interested in detailed damage to vehicles, especially large vehicles like ships and giant starships. To houses too.

So much for "immersion".

Which Silent Hunter games have decent damage model?

The downside is that it's company of heroes.

Silent Hunter 3 with Grey Wolves mod.

DCS World... maybe? Obviously it does planes but I'm not sure how good the ship damage model is.

World of Tanks, while being an action game, does actually go into ridiculous detail in modelling armour strength and equipment locations across tanks (it's the game that teaches you why 'front transmission' are the two words that explain why German tanks were actually terrible).

The Combat Mission line of games doesn't have deforming textures but all the ballistics are modelled.

It depends on how much you care about the sim/wargame balance. Obviously the more mainstream the game the more money there was for graphics. Probably the best game (no ships sorry) is Men of War: Allied Assault. It's incredibly pretty despite being quite old and tanks and terrain will all deform and damage depending on where and how hard they are hit.
