OT USA vs Canada T20 Cricket World Cup in Dallas

Post by Neilster »

It's just started. Technically this is the oldest rivalry in international cricket, with the first game in 1844.

T20 is the fastest form of cricket, with lots of action and games that are over in a few hours. Mostly the tournament is in the Caribbean but 16 games are being played in the U.S. where a growing South Asian population is slowly increasing (from a base of basically nothing) interest in the sport.

This tournament is a big deal. Cricket is a massive international sport with hundreds of millions of fans in India alone. There'll be tremendous interest before Australia's near inevitable triumph 8-)

Edit: I originally said a few games are in the U.S. It appears to be 16. Four in Texas and Florida and eight in New York. The stadium in New York, on Long Island, will have temporary stands for 34,000 people and has been built in record time. After the tournament the stands will be dismantled but the cricket ground will remain. About $US2.7 million is predicted to flow into the Nassau County economy.

It's a good standard. Canada genuinely qualified and the U.S. did as they are co-hosts but they've been in good form and are favourites for this game.

The ground and pitch are good, especially as the build-up has been marred by bad weather. Ticketing has been a mess but ever since India started dominating the ICC (international Cricket Council), there's been more focus on money and less on proper organisation and growing the game in the developing cricketing nations :|

Canada batted first and got off to a brisk start. The US pulled it back well but Canada put them to the sword in the last two (of 20) overs to get 194.

Anything near 200 is difficult to chase but the pitch is playing well (which favours the batters).

p.s. I'm watching it on Amazon Prime. Else it might be on channel 973 or something, right after Wayne's World :P

Wow! The U.S. won relatively easily on the back of Aaron Jones' incredible 94 from 40 balls. I don't care who you're playing. That's great batting.

Their innings got off to a slow start before Jones and Andries Gous went berserk. Great start to the tournament for the U.S. and an excellent advertisement for the game in North America.

I'll post highlights later.

BTW, here's an explanation of cricket for those that understand baseball...
