Worrisome trend for multiplayer

Post by Kuokkanen »

After a long time, I downloaded & installed Panzer Corps & Grand Campaigns to check the multiplayer options. Instead I got an error:
MESSAGE
Failed to process server response.
From this I surmise multiplayer is online only through a server that has been shutdown and hotseat is not an option. I know Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of Shogun has the same thing going for it as I have played it multiplayer before. Eventually its server will be shutdown too, and hotseat isn't an option either.

Is this what we want from multiplayer in war games?

It might depend upon your internet settings, game settings, or is related to an issue mentioned elsewhere but specifically for the UK.

What would be better would be one computer acting as the server for multiplayer games instead of a server owned and controlled elsewhere.

Hear, hear.

I have been mostly satisfied with multiplayer options in SPWAW, MegaMek, and Battle for Wesnoth. In case of MegaMek, dedicated multiplayer servers exist, but any player can act as a host for it.

We have never shut down a server that we run for MP. If you have a copy of PzC from us, and it can't connect to the server, then it is likely a firewall or other connection issue, that we would be happy to work with you (in the appropriate forum) to solve.

In the past I've played Panzer Corps(10 years ago), Field Of Glory, War in The East and 2 didn't have trouble while living in İstanbul didn't see any problems about data transfer. Which should be lowest of all about transfer for any region.

Some good news. I opened a topic in an appropriate forum without a response. I also had some other Internet connection troubles, namely desktop computer with a cable connection to router seemingly went off-line, but iPhone worked mostly fine with wi-fi through the same router. I turned off the router for few minutes, turned it back on, today I tried Panzer General again, and multiplayer menus seem to be working now.

Still hot seat don't seem to be an option which is a bummer. Would have worked perfectly fine on a tablet.

And no "Direct Connect" (or PBEM) option either ?

Please don't buy games that don't have these as a backup option.

Compare with the "GameSpyPocalypse" :

https://www.techspot.com/article/2170-gamespy/

(The author is very positive about things like Steam MultiPlayer, but they forget that they won't be around forever - at least when GameSpy shut down, "manually entering in IP addresses" was still an option for those orphaned games !)

Through e-mail support I was told that hotseat multiplayer is a choice in Panzer Corps. But it's under single player.
