Yes I have it and enjoyed it a lot. It is simple enough to get into right away. My favorite part is the fact that you can invade planets and play a sci-fi version of panzer general on every planet you invade. The races all have different ships and ground units and you can upgrade everything to stronger versions several times. I think (if I remember right) ships have 6 levels of upgrades and ground units have 4 levels and the levels are significantly better than the previous ones. It is much better with a real opponent than the ai...

What about Star General (SSI). It does have a bad image. Has anyone tried it ?

I can´t remember, what exactly led to the bad standing Star General had within the PG forums.
I only remember, that this put me away from buying it.

But if there are some folks out there enjoing the game I will try to get it, if I´ll get the chance.

Yeah, Aurora may be what you're looking for.  Low on graphics, ultra-high on detail.  Prepare to get swamped by all the data that comes in!  There've been some pretty interesting AAR's on that on the Wargamer forum.  In some ways it reminds me of Harpoon in space.

4x? Not really my cup of tea. I prefer more focused games. I bought WPO (mostly because of the setting - alternative history practically makes it Sci-fi and the interwar hardware was very cool) but the monstrous scope of that thing managed to kill all my interest[:(].
Damn, a tactical wargame set in the same setting as WPO would be awesome.

I'm gonna ask a stupid question(why do I always ask stupid questions I should know? [:(]). What is WPO?

Breach and its line of games were very good.

Renegade Legion Interceptor was outstanding. Seems to me a candidate for GOG (Good Old Games for Ilovestrategy). [:)]

Is Breach something similar to Laser Squad?

Pretty much. Breach 2 could be linked to a decent, and 'realistic' I suppose, starship combat game from the same devs but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. This was twenty years or so ago, mind.

Edit, 'Rules of Engagement'. Knew I'd get there in the end.

Yes and Rules of engagement 2 came out as well. I loved those games back in the day...of course the graphics left much to be desired. Renegade Legion was a sure hit with me too, in fact I got it running a few weeks ago with dosbox. The rub is that I had to repurchase the game from amazon due to only having a copy with 5.25 disks in my original one. Now I can play it wih 3.5 disks on my oldest system.[8D]

Thanks for the info, I'll try them out.

Another way to play a realistic Sci-fi/science-fantasy game is to mod a fictional campaign and fictional units into a normal realistic wargame.
