Thanks Falcon and Hentzau! This is EXACTLY what I am looking for! When you edit abandonware crap off your earlier posts and add URLs/links to other mentioned games, I'll be happy with you [:)]

I have no earlier posts, and I wouldn't mention abandonware. [:-] I understand that Ardennes Offensive 2.4 was released as freeware? Where can that be found?

TA Spring

Image

How I didn't mention this yearlier? TA Spring is remake of Total Annihilation. Game is typical RTS: resources are collected and units are built in bases (when bases have been constructed first). Total Annihilation happen to make it better than anything before of it and most new similar games are no match to it either.

TA Spring has some compatibility with original TA which makes converting existing TA mods to Spring relatively easy thing (easy compared to creating mod from scratch). In addition of most features what made TA best RTS of its time, Spring offers bunch of new features. One interesting feature is take direct first person control of unit and go out to drive (or walk). If other units are ordered to guard unit what player controls, they'll follow it.

At the moment game has unfinished feeling. There is no AI which means no single player scenarios. In addition I got so fed up by TA's official 175 single player scenarios, multiplayer and various mods that if I play Spring regularly, I would throw up! I'll get back to it on later date.

Would you like to know more?
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Got confirmation about Empire from Walter Bright himself
You can download it free from www.classicempire.com, but you cannot
redistribute it.
I'm still waiting confirmation from 2 by 3 about rumors regarding Fantasy General being freeware. I have a feeling I got to wait long time [>:]

Warfare1,

Excellent links. Thanks.

Matrix guys should know about Giuseppe Rava.
He did most (if not all) covers for the Vae Victis French strategy magazine. And they are somptuous.

Xconq is and open source strategy game with an extensive editor.......there are many scenarios to chose from, and if you have the patience, you can create your own games.....though graphically challenged, it is an incredible effort by many contributors.....

Why do you ask? Of course not! Just download MegaMek, unzip it and run megamek.bat. It works with J++ (Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine) which is installed by default on new Windows. MegaMekNET requires Java 1.4 compatibility and is launched from file startClient.bat.

Here is a link to a list of pure PBM and/or PBEM games, many of which are free (the list is too long to pick them out):

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/pbm_list/wargame.html

These are not generally games in the sense of being programs you run on your computer, though some do have that ability. It's more about exchanging information via a central third party (referee). Definitely all strategy though.

Can I be so bold as to suggest http://waronline.net/

It's a free online strategy game that is flash-based.
There's 1-vs-1 Battles, or multi-player Campaigns.

Here's a link to an older screenshot... http://waronline.net/images/screen1.jpg

Still needs some work, but something different.

Ps. This is my personal project, and not a Matrix game

Free games, I wonder if the (might be wrong, but looks like it) author of the 'Conan' game paid Frank Fazetta for use of the artwork as background? <g>
