Well, I got my insurance settlement check today, and gotta find me a decent commuting car. Damn, I didn't realize how much I was attached to my trusty old 98 Cav, but it will soon be scrap metal.

Thankfully, the family has a new Saturn Vue, BUT, that's the wife's, and I gotta have my own way to work.

Get a chevy impala or monte carlo KG. I had one (impala) for 25 years that never gave me any major trouble. Just water pump and radiator hoses and one time fuel pump. That's pretty good lifetime minor problems for a car. Chevrolet rules in my family. I have a 96 monte carlo now that I'm still running on the factory TIRES over 100k miles. No major issues so far (knock on wood), just a battery in 11 years.

Go Asian if your looking for basic transportation .

American Car-Makers these days can't even make their high end cars with quality. A certain Chevy Sports Car I had a few years back decided it didn't want to let you turn the steering wheel while it was in motion. Turns out that happens on tens of thousands if not more of those cars. Hush Hush. Then after the dealer had sold me a bogus extended warranty years back when I bought it (which took only 3 days to sort out legally) they threatened to tow my car off the lot. I mean the friggin steering wheel locked up while I was driving it not to mention its the most expensive car they sell. Can't they wait a day or two while things get sorted out? Way to go for customer service. Oh and they still denied the problem till just recently when they issued a recall for every last one of them...

Had plenty of other troubles with my Pontiac, Ford, and so on.

No I now only drive Toyota/Lexus. Multiple Vehicles and not one problem and awesome quality, price, and service. I'll never buy a non German/Japanese car again. Of course part of it is probably made in America anyways but not the part that counts! (It's engineered elsewhere for that matter).

Cars are a waste of money. Buy a cheap Toyota and spend the rest of the money on better things in life...

If I had that kind of camara I would. Actually I still have enough tread to pass inspection every year. SO, it's more than you think Veldormun. ) Tires can actually last a long long time. It's how you drive on them that matters. No speeding starts and slow braking instead of slamming on the brakes at every light or stopsign. I've always taken real good care of my cars and that's why I think they last so long. Had Chevy's all my life and not a one has ever given me a major problem. You should see my 57 chevy in the back yard.

Inspection? What country do you live in? Here in America we have the right to drive on bald tires if we want to. You don't even get in trouble for that if you cause an accident because of it.

Had Chevy's all my life and not a one has ever given me a major problem. You should see my 57 chevy in the back yard.

Tell that to the at least 126,624 people who have to worry that every time they go to turn the steering wheel it might be the last time it decides to turn. I guess thats just not enough people to matter if only 10% experience that and 10% of those are injured and 10% of those fataly so.

All I can say is... Maybe they don't build em like they use to....

Something about saving a nickle per car by using a rubberband instead of an extra bolt. [:D]

You're in alot less danger from tightwads than the other ____wads out there. Tightwads drive carefully to milk as much use out of their vehicle as possible. The world could use more tightwads, especially in political office. [;)]

Well KG, looks to me like you need a car that will be good in snow, cheap to operate and reasonable sticker price. (insurance being what they are, they prolly lowballed you in the settlement.)
Don't get stuck on car nationality. That is so mixed up, it is hard to keep straight where any car is built.
Just figure out what you need the car to do and go from there. I think I would recommend all wheel drive for your winters, so maybe Subaru?

Yes, what inspection, there is no car inspection on an annual basis. Unless he was inspecting his own vehicle.


100,000 miles on the same set of tires. You might get away with it if they were Vogue tires. That is amazing if RH gets that many miles out of tires. I don't know of an American tire company who makes a tire with a warranty for 100,000.


KG stick with the Chevy or GMC make. You know from your own experience that they are relatively reliable. Repair parts are cheaper than the foriegn cars.

Chevy rules!! Their warrenty is as good as anyone elses and they now make a top notch product. In the last few years look at all the recalls the Asian car companies have had for faulty multipul gizmoes. (like my spellin)
GM has had very few by comparison. The Buick La Sabrer was rated the best made car for years.
Saturn also makes great vehicles. We have a little 4 door that has over 130,000 miles on it (got new tires last year) and it still runs great. As a matter of fact Im going to go back up norht with  it soon (1200 mile round trip) to see the great white north of NY for the Hollidays.[:)]

You don't have State car inspections every year? Here in Texas and well everywhere I've ever lived there was a State car inspection service. If you have bald tires bud you won't get an inspection sticker which means you can't drive your car without fear of getting stopped and getting a $400 fine. They inspect the lights, brakes, tires and windshield wipers and muffler here. I tried to go one year without an inspection and learned the hard way how much it costs not to get inspected. lol Yeah boy inspections are like numero uno next to having insurance down here. Vegas and Phoenix were even worse, not only did your car have to pass the normal inspection, but, you had to pass Smog control figures as well. Thas one reason I moved away from those cities. Damn if they don't get you in the casino's they get you in car tax and inspection fines etc. etc.

Yup! Everything is still factory except the battery ole Sargie. Maybe I can get 200k miles and write to Chevrolet and they will give me something or put me in a commercial.

Also, I look at what people say about cars and parts on them need to be replaced because of this and that much like I do my own health. Since I was oh 30 or so doctors have been saying I was a heart attack or stroke waiting to happen. Ok now it's been 20+ years since they said that and I have 399 choloesterol and 279 blood sugar count and welp I'm still TICKING. I think it's just my karma in life. Always felt things don't happen until they are suppose to happen no matter what other people say or think. Same went for my mom. She made it 86 years and they told her to stop smoking 30 years before that or it would kill her eventually. Lol she didn't die of lung disease, her lungs were as clear as most young peoples when she died. So, if I get to 86 years old I ain't gonna complain because I'm fixing to die. hahaha I figure if you live past 40 you've lived and the rest is just borrowed time waiting on your train to arrive.

California does not have car inspections. But when your car reaches six years old you must have it smog checked every two years. Cost about $80.00 for that inspection.

When your right your right. My Toyota/Lexus's have recalls for all kinds of crazy problems. From faulty floor mat clips to a chance of not quite bright enough headlights to meet federal standards.

My GM/Chevy had just one recall in comparison... An excerpt follows:

DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION OF THE LOCK PLATE RELATIVE TO THE SWITCH TRANSITION POINT, THERE COULD THEN BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE LOCK PLATE AND PIN CAUSING THE STEERING TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING .
Consequence:

We have inspections in the UK every year. Called an MOT. It costs around £45 (about 90 of your US dollars [:D] ) and is designed to keep people legal. If you don't have it, you don't get road tax and without road tax your not legal to drive on the road. If that happens, your insurance (if you had any) is void. When all this comes together in a collision, the idea is they are responsible for all costs/damages etc. and probably end up in a little prison time for the offender.

It doesn't always work like that and there is the chance the little scrote will get out of paying any reparations. But they won't be driving for a while.

It pretty much works for the most part. Of course, you will always get people who don't get them tested and off they go, causing danger to one and all.

It isn't infallable, but it's an attempt to keep people legal.

And KG, from what I gather, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Subarus, as suggested, are good 4x4 cars and pretty reliable.

Sure, it may be good on gas....but... it would suck trying to drive up the long hills down by Corridor G, or even up to Yeager Airport. Would be easy to park down in Town Center or over by the gorgeous shiny-domed capital building [:)] Can you imagine getting that little thing up to Hawk's Nest? I bet driving to Beckley would be a hoot, crawling to the top of one mountain, coasting down, crawling up--take you a good bit of time [:D]
