What old wargames would you pay $10 for?
Just been looking at Good old Games, and it got me thinking...
If Matrix games did the same thing with older wargames (package them with a dosbox installer, all pre patched and ready to double click install and play on a new Operating system, pdf documentation), which ones would you love to have on your computer now for, let us say, $10?
For myself, without a lot of thought I would like:
Steel Panthers 1 with the brilliant music and movies.
Complete Carriers at War (90's version).
Clash of Steel future edition.
Battlefront series.
The '5 star General' games.
No Greater Glory.
That will do for starters.

SSI's lesser known ones set in the cold war - i would like to play these - Red Lightning, Reforger 88. Also Battleground Ardennes, V for Victory collection. 5th Fleet. Iron Cross - precursor to Close Combat. Personally though i just want someone to fix up the crash bugs in the Wargamer 1813 game from Empire Interactive. It is the best conceived game for the period ever. Its open source too all the files can be edited still i suppose though i lack the knowledge to do this myself.

I would not mind easy access to the V4Victory design.
I would like to be able to run Steel Panthers 3 Brigade Combat without being tormented.
I don't require Steel Panthers 1, we already have it, you can either run WinSPWW2 or SPWaW.
The 5 star series is currently called Panzer Corps, not 10 bucks admittedly, but I'd rather have it. Which is why I do.
It is nice that they redid Close Combat for us, pity Battlefront is likely unwilling to give away the proper patches for making original CM work. Likely better to just run the new engine though.

I have too many too complicated wargames, and not enough sufficiently interested non wargamer friends.

"The Perfect General" game designed by Mark Baldwin and published in 1991 by Quantum Quality Productions (QQP). A refurbished version of the original is available for Windows since 2003, web site: http://killerbeesoftware.com/
I own and played the DOS version, it was great little game back in the early 90's, I haven't played the 2003 Windows version, has anyone played it or own it?

RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for?
1. definitely Carriers at War (but I would never pay the price it is now)
2. Europe Ablaze (though matrixgames and SSG haven't made an update yet)
3. Operation Crusade (D-Day game)
4. An Avalon Hill type Battle of the Bulge game (not the crappy ones we been getting)
5. Steel Panthers with an isometric view not the old top down version.
Actually though I really don't want remakes I want the new stuff with better ai, (tired of playing the crappy or no ai games) and I'm tired of remakes like Panzer Corp and John Tillers no ai remake games. Be glad when Heroes of Stalingrad comes out myself. Miss Kiois games in the ancient series and waiting on a west front version like Panzer Corps Osfront (don't really like east front games, Heroes of Stalingrad is one of the few I think I might like)

Somebody mentioned Battleground Ardennes - I've got that somewhere, never played it. Time to blow the dust off.

My first ever wargame on a machine was Cris Crawford's Patton Strikes Back.
It looked a lot like Panther Games in that the player had a map with no obvious grid, the units were just symbols to tell you they were there and their current mode posture, and the point of the game was all decision based, and had nothing to do with admiring the graphics.
I miss that game. It actually came on 5.25 disks too. Ah the good ole days when a program was about the design, and not the graphics.

Yeah I played it but lost my download (and code) in a PC crash. I am seriously considering ordering it again.
Was a very fun game, and one I'd love to see revamped to modern standards.

Richard, I'm thinking about getting the 2003 Windows version, did you play it in Win 7? Any problems playing it in Win 7? Thanks!

So many of my old favorites have been mentioned that my memory can't bring to mind any more right now. So I will comment on a couple instead.
You should give Strategic Command a try. I feel it is an improved version of Clash of Steel and it was one of the first games I purchased from Good Old Games.
I remember reading somewhere back when No Greater Glory was still new that it was the best of the American Civil War PC games that were available at the time.
I am inclined to feel the same way. Age of Rifles was a masterpiece.

Just to chime in with some more recent suggestions as well:
Aside from Steel Panthers: World at War, take a look at Conflict of Heroes and the upcoming Lock 'n Load.
Hopefully we'll have a new Complete edition coming out from SSG soon.
You'll want to check out the upcoming Strategic Command 3.
Meaning the old SSG games? Have you tried the new ones?
If you haven't played Panzer Corps / Allied Corps / Afrika Corps or Germany at War, you need to try these. IMHO they have completely replaced the old versions for me.
Great game - definitely try Forge of Freedom, War Between the States and American Civil War now, which took ACW grand strategy to the next level.

- Erik
