The Best Black and White Films of All Time
All these films are classics but the one that had the biggest impact (being age 8 or 9 really added to it) on me was Frankenstein (1931) #97!

There's some good'uns there alright
A Night to Remember
Some Like it Hot
Rebecca (just how gorgeous was Joan Fontaine)?
It's a wonderful Life
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Schindler's List (but which scandalously was not no.1)???? Simply the best film ever.
Thanks Patrick.

Thanks for this link. This gives me some new movies to watch. I remember so many of these and yet there are quite a few I have not seen either.
I haven't seen Miracle Worker in a long time but remember that being an amazing flick. My man, Humphrey Bogart is is so many of these too. Surprised African Queen wasn't in there.
Good Stuff for movie buffs! [:)]

Zelig. It has to be one of Woody Allen's best. Great choice in making it in b&w. Close seconds; Stardust Memories or Manhatten.

Young Frankenstein for sure!
One BW Marlene Dietrich film i saw last year which was just outstanding in its sets and characters and costumes and dialogue i felt was
The Scarlet Empress - based on Catherine the Great, it has some great scenes like when Dietrich as the young Catherine is brought forth on the raised on the shoulders of the russian cavalry and in a Hussar uniform herself. Its not a dry film in the least.
Another one i saw which was great in its scope was 'Der Choral von Leuthen' an epic war film based around the battle of Leuthen. The portrayal of Frederick the Great and the scenes of the battle are great, though Frederick is probably portrayed as being a bit older than he was at the time
also F W Murnau's Faust is quite spectacular, some great effects used for the time

Young Frankenstein for sure!
+1 I just watched Young Frankenstein last week and enjoyed it very much. I'm not saying it is the best black and white movie on that list--there are some real classics that have it beat--but it's well worth watching.
Thanks for the link, Wings.

Ice Cold in Alex. 1958, war film starring John Mills, Cynthia Sims, Anthony Quayle. Used to be on TV a lot when I was young growing up in UK. Now got it on DVD and still watch it religiously!

I've watched recently Sweet Smell of Success, and undoubtedly it deserves to be on that list.
Outstanding performances, the script, photography is just top notch.
Maybe the best Tony Curtis performance.
Highly recommended.

I would like to mention the 1939 movie 'Four Feathers'. I have always thought that was a great movie as well.

As far as black & white films go, I always really liked Sergeant York with Gary Cooper.
