Napoleonic Battles

Post by Angiel »

Hi
This is a game about battles in the Napoleonic era from 1795 until 1815 where the player plays the part of the French (at least for now).
It includes some Napoleonic battles, Arcole, Marengo, Loano, Mont-Saint-Jean already playable, plus others scenarios in development (Rivoli, Lodi, Talavera etc.), played in a hexagonal turn-based map.

There are different formations: line, square, general order and troops: line infantry, guard, cavalry, artillery. Victory is achieved by accumulating points, earned for eliminating units + conquering objectives, furthermore
there is the possibility of an automatic victory or a draw. There are 3 difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard).

The game is enough simple and fast. More scenarios will be added soon, including a scenario with a random arrangement of the terrain, objectives and the two armies
There will be a version for windows 10 and probably for Linux.

Your suggestions and advice are welcome.

The graphics are difficult to make out. Perhaps you should consider using tiles like traditional board wargames.

Good to see European wars. I miss Philippe T. so much.

But there are a few Americans here and included in those wars should be the war between the USA and the UK during 1812-1815.

Yes a bit exaggerated.[:)] Although there is some truth, both World Wars changed that a bit I guess. I had an opponent only interested in Napoleonic Wars tactically not campaign mode. It is good to see new games& designs.

For the 1812-1815 War I had zero knowledge until Ageod game. Civil War in America is more promoted I guess. Cheers.

Yes, especially the units in general order are not seen very much. I will try to modify them.

I have published the combat table and combat modifiers.

Since you have these graphics already, you can make tiles as well then give people the choice of what to use.

I changed the colors of the hexagons a bit. Maybe the units are seen more.

Looks nice, it does remind one of Steel Panthers, but that's a good thing.

Looking at the artillery facing in above screen shot, can you explain the facing, with respect to line of site?

I can see several Artillery hexes where artillery appears to be facing a hexside, so I assume LOS goes alont that hexside plus hexside right and left.

But one shows facing pointing toward a hex vertex, which impies LOS along two hexsides either side of the vertex.

Thanks
Rick

Thanks for your interest.
Both the artillery and the other units orient themselves when firing (they can assume a 360 ° orientation based on the target's position).

Everything will be clearer when the game is released in beta (as soon as I have finished translating the instruction manual into English).

Example of phases of a turn:
-Phase of the Napoleonic Movement
- Allied Cavalry Movement Phase
- Change phase Napoleonic formation
- Allied Infantry and Artillery Movement Phase
- Allied Formation Change Phase
- Combat Phase, the army that fires first is determined randomly.

Formations and facing were important in this era of warfare. Exactly how much time does a turn encompass?

I see what appears to be a leader unit with a flag. Do all leaders including the subordinate leaders get flags? If so, do your subordinate leaders have different flags to mark them as subordinates? When then may or may not be visible as such to the enemy?

Also, what about line, square and column formations? To me the counters are not clear enough in showing that. I am thinking like the 1970's when SPI introduced those line formations (or was it another board game company that had the 1 inch counters when in line formation).

For this era, morale, formations (line, column, square, skirmishers, etc.), are leadership are very important.

For example this is from SPI's Wellington's Victory (the most recent VASSAL module):
