Entry level HEX-based wargame?

Post by PortunusPelasergei »

Hi! I'm a new guy coming into the wargames community, since I've played CMO, my interest in wargames has started to grow, I'm still playing CMO now and it's awesome! Recently, I think hex-based wargame caught my attention as well (old school style, since CMO is more of Radar style wargame), at first, my friends told me to try WDS (wargame design studio) games and to play their free samples, It's very fun and since then, I'm sure I need more games like this, can't afford WDS tho because they're quite expensive so I started to search on Steam and there are a lot of options.

I tried Strategic Command WW1 and it was good, however since it's on a strategic level I kind of need more time to get into it, so do any of you guys have some advice? I have the list that caught my attention such as :
GG War in the west/east 2
Flashpoint campaign: southern storm
Decisive campaign: Barbarossa/Ardennes
The operational art of war 4

pretty much every hex-based on a tactical-operational level, any thoughts?

Really the WDS games are the best bang for your buck and they relatively cheap at $39.95, however they have a game a week on sale for $29.95.

WITE2 is very good but its starting price is $80 and may be a bit high for you, plus the learning curve is a bit high and intense for newbies.

The SC Europe WW2 is a good choice to get into wargames.

The Flashpoint system is also good for modern combat.

You may consider the CS Vietnam and CS Middle East games as well, they are platoon level (so tactical).

The TOAW is another good choice its mainly a wargame construction set, that has been around for decades and has literally thousands of user designed scenarios.

Another good choices is Order of Battle, easy to get into and learn and play and its fun.

YMMV

Ahh thanks btw, I think I'd go with TOAW since it's on operational level and has a tons of scenarios, I think I'm gonna stay away from strategic level wargames :D

Modern Operations (CMO) and have dabbled in Strategic Command WW1, you're in a great spot to explore more tactical and operational-level hex-based games.

Greetings from a fellow new player of Wargaming! You have made some excellent choices of interest my friend! I can only speak on the following since I only own these:

1) Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive - Really really cool Operational Wargame that tones the scale down a bit to bring a focus to more of a tactical level. So, it's kind of a hybrid of Operational and Tactical I think? Regardless, it's REALLY damn fun and challenging. I really enjoy the A.I.

2) Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa - This game is an absolute blast, and you will absolutely not regret purchasing it. It's kind of War in the East lite with some RPG elements thrown in to add a different layer and keeping it very interesting. You can turn these mechanics off though if you just want a straight up Operational wargame. Highly highly HIGHLY recommend Barbarossa.

3) GG War in the East 2 - Expensive. Huge. But oh. my. god the detail to this game is just mouth watering. If you love data and reading about everything there is to know about everything that was used on the Eastern front in WW2....THIS is the game you want to play. I mean, I cannot put into words of how much I am enjoying this game and I just started playing it yesterday. The main Campaign scenario is HUGE!!! You will be playing it for a long time. It does come with a bunch of small scenarios that allows you to play in the shallow end while you learn the basic mechanics and nuances and slowly weens you in deeper and deeper to it's mechanics the further you go through the scenario list. I have seen a lot of suggestions on various Forums that advise on waiting to play WitE2, however; I say non-sense! If WitE 2 interests you and you have patience and the discipline to learn and retain knowledge, then do not fear the beast that is WitE 2. If I can learn this game, you definitely can! Just take it a nibble at a time and you will definitely love it. There are so many guides on the internet to help you. I enjoyed watching The Historical Gamer and Strategy Gaming Dojo for video guides on this game. Strategy Gaming Dojo has a "quick start" tutorial that is about 5 hours long in totality. Highly recommend giving that one a watch.

If you ever find yourself getting into the tactical side of Wargaming, I highly recommend the Combat Mission series. They are simply amazing and I have been playing them for years! The newer titles are currently on sale in the Store as we speak and you should definitely give them a look!

Enjoy your new addiction and welcome!
