SPW-50m

Post by Dodo98 »

I'm a bit confused about the existence of the SPW-50m. I've never heard of this version before. I've checked multiple of my sources (Among others: https://www.relikte.com/_basis/docs/nva-9.pdf ; http://www.fireandfury.com/orbats/modcweastgerman.pdf ; and the databse of the game "Armored Brigade") but none ever mentions this Self Propelled Mortar. Could you point me to the source of your research for this vehicle?

Your German is probably way better than mine :)

Here is a copy of "Die Nationale Volksarmee und die Grenztruppen der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik Ende 1988 " See if you can find it in this document.

Thanks for the help John! The document you attached is actually one of the sources that I've already checked and linked in my post. I've even used a newer edition than the one you provided here, but this vehicle isn't mentioned in any unit.

It's a BTR-50 with a mortar crew onboard.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

So the BTR-50 is just the transport for the mortar crew? If they want to fire the mortar they have to dismount the vehicle? I'm so confused, cause in my linked NVA document (clearly one of the best sources for the East German OOB) only the mortars itself are mentioned but no transporting BTRs.

Dodo98, we'll check.

p.s. Agree on relikte.de being great source for the 1989 OOB, troop dispositions, barracks, Muni's, StOÜbPl, etc. The website now seems defunct. Did the author go somewhere else with his site?

Frohe Weihnachten!

Cool, thanks for taking the time to do that!
The website is still there, mabye they switched from .de to .com. I always use this link: https://www.relikte.com

Merry Christmas to you and your family as well. And also to the rest of the On Target Team!
