Recon unit observations

Post by Zumwalt_446 »

Below are a few observations that I've made about how recon units tend to work in-game and where these may deviate from real-life:

1. Recon units are commonly used to spot minefields/improved positions/obstacles in advance of the main body. However, is it correct that they should detect an entire hex/hex side minefield without having entered it? This is one area where I think a "die roll" of some sort could be applied to avoid guaranteed spotting when in a close hex.

2. After a recon unit is destroyed by units in the defense, an artillery strike on the defending units soon follows. However, many situations would have the one- or two-vehicle units destroyed nearly simultaneously without being able to report an attack, let alone the direction from which it came. I suggest an addition that implements a < 100% chance of small units that are engaged being able to report the location of their attacker prior to being destroyed.

3. The game could greatly benefit from an ability to set targeting priority/hold fire orders by unit type (e.g. engage tanks at maximum range with top priority, IFVs as second priority, and hold fire on light/recon units to prevent prematurely giving away a position).

As always, thoughts are appreciated :)
