Concerned About Our Empire's Poor Reputation

Post by Viking67 »

When a true warrior faction, like Mortalen, attacks another planet, home world's should not take a hit to Happiness. It should be the opposite. What's the logic here?

I understand the hit to Reputation. Makes perfect sense and should happen.

First, only a Monarchy doesn't disapprove of unjustified wars declared by their own government. Race doesn't matter.

Part of the Mortalen ethos is honor. They believe in a good fight- not just that, but a legendary fight, not just fighting for the sake of fighting. Without honor, without glory, it is a hallow battle.

Still, some empires and races regard reputation to different degrees. Supposedly (I haven't verified it for certain, but did observe it in other races and was told as much by a developer), the Mortalen aren't as opposed to some negative reputation from unjustified war. They may be more affected by out-of-war attacks on civilians, getting spies caught, breaking non-aggression pacts and so on.

Further, regardless of the stance toward war, it brings sacrifice and loss. Losing family/clan members, diminished resource availability, more stringent rules in daily lives, etc.

Its just that some are more inclined to overlook such hardships in favor of war through resistance to War Weariness. The Mortalen are very resistant to War Weariness, especially with an appropriate government.

Good view point.

In this case the Mortalens were attack and war declared upon them. As a result they assaulted and took over a planet. The hit to home worlds seems out of character in this case.

I'm sorry, for the sake of clarity: you are saying the Mortalen, in a war declared upon them, captured a colony and got a reputation hit because of it, resulting in the loss of happiness? And you understand why there was a loss of reputation, but don't understand why that leads to unhappiness?

Something is missing. Maybe it's my understanding of what you're saying, a detail is being overlooked, or maybe its this.

Your citizens care about reputation not because of how other empires see your empire- its how THEY see the empire they're part of.

Correct: The Mortalen, in a war declared upon them, captured a colony and got a reputation hit because of it, resulting in the loss of happiness on Mortalen home worlds.

Does invading and capturing imperial colonies during a war impact your reputation negatively?

Bombarding them does, and so does either invading or raiding them outside of war.

"Does invading and capturing imperial colonies during a war impact your reputation negatively?"

I think you smell what's cooking. No, it doesn't... that's why something is surely missing.
