Now my question is:
What the heck does the fps slider do as well as the cpu usage slider?
I can see no difference..

By the way. Big universe you have there :-)
Out of curiosity, could you turn on the Shift-~ overlay and share a screenshot from that same galaxy once it is running?

The FPS slider limits the max FPS, can be useful in some cases.

Do some work, alt tab give some orders, alt tab work etc. Now, if I leave system load target at the default 60, my cpu is 50% usage all the time. It does not matter I'm in game, or if I'm paused or if the game is minimized. It's 50% usage ALL the time. If I reduce it to minimum it goes to 25%. This still enough for my laptop coolers to take off and just spin spin spin.

We live in a modern world. C# is a high level language. It has so many ways of synchronizing threads, and signaling and locking. Must we really do while(true) or thread.sleep on all workers or whatever it is happening
From what I understand, even from the main menu scene there is some part of the simulation that has been initialized. We do plan to look at this again in the future, but it's not a high priority.

The system load target and the FPS limit should both help with keeping your laptop cooler if you alt-tab.

ok, took me a day to get to the bottom of what you said
havent thought about chill in a while, usually only use it with games with broken or not working vsync
I give it y try, see what it does

Well, I tried to do as you wished - but sometimes its hanging, sometimes it runs smooth.. and the same goes foro the gpu that takes more mem or less and I do not understand that.
I will post three screenshots.
as well as a short and a long video on youtube.
i hope you can get a satisfying answer.
I have relocated the Z820 to my sons room and there is only that small monitor. I usually play with 1920x1080 and more is not needed in and for my eyes..

Soo.. if you need more footage, please tell me.

And as a tit for tat:
I have one question for you (and I hit that F3 and F5 keys sometimes in the long video to show you):
When you have the Diplomatic overlay (F3) opened, the Fonts look crystal clear. If you have the normal look or the Exploration view (F5), the Fonts are blurry. I know that you are working on it or can not change it - but the Diplomatic view is a view that could fit to every view.. The Icons/Badges could be an add on but not part of the font so to speak.
I just found it accidentally today - while looking for THE key that hides the WHOLE UI. I did not find but thought there was one.. So that you can see the stats to the left better (shift+' in german shift+ö).

Ups, I forgot, here is the button to hide the ui:

long video (with switching the settings and 8x most of the time) link

And as an attachment three screenshots

P.S.: Sorry for the "clicks" in the sound. Its my USB Headsets or another USB component that had some gliltches.. As i write, its gone.. Windows 10 had some "improvements" the one or the other day, and now it found my usb mouse.. its the same mouse as ever.. but you know windows.. windows' driver are not always the best.. and in these days it comes back..

At work I have a brandnew system with a quadro. I updated to windows 11 and also said: "yes", gimme the new gpu drivers that are tested for good.. and.. meshmixer just blew withthe gpu mem usage OFFthe charts..
System: HP Z2 G9, Intel® Core™ i9, i9-14900K, 64 GB, DDR5-SDRAM, 2 TB, Windows 11 Pro with RTX4000
My GPU mem was FULL.... I installed an older version from nvidia.. the MEM usage was low as ever, no problems with millions of points again.. I never had, but the new driver brought that problem with it..
So we use to scan objects and have big stl-files.

Just saying.. and a gtx 1060 can also do a good job.

Regarding the Videos: The game is run with the Z820,
an old simulation workstation we used to calculate our forging tools: link

P.P.S.: The Memory load is pretty low. Its not using it as it should, correct?
If you go fasft forward at the long video to the last third, you can see also the gpu usage and cpu usage

We need ascension. Thats the peak.
Like in galimulator. Your galaxy size reminds me of this nice game:

ha, almost forgot about that Galimulator  8-) nice one...however...the simulation is extremely simplified as it only requires a 1Ghz CPU and 1GB RAM.

As for Distant Worlds 2 I would hope we would get an option for 2400 Stars for 12x12 & 14x14 Sectors later on.
CPUs are really powerful nowadays and the game is multithreaded...so lets spin up all them cores

This increase of Galaxy size should go hand in hand with the curbing in of the problem of agressive Races conquering independents and thus invalidating Colonization Range while at the same multiplying the possible planets to colonize. This feels a bit cheesy to be honest.
So all of the sudden you see Dhayut colonize all planet types with different races they conquered.
This does not make a lot of sense and this when the game often spins out of control and converts into a steamrolling of one agressive race or the player who also uses this cheesy mechanic.

To minimize this problem I flagged all major space faring races for "use as independent" as false and only have the few remaining races spawn a rare colony here and there for flavor.
This does not suppress race colonys created by event but it helps a lot

I thought of galimulator because your safe is almost as big as that universe in the galimulator :-)

And I really would love to see DW2 doing the same with so much more inside/under the hood; simulating the rise and fall of empires.

But that time really has not come. The game will evolve and the code will be optimized.
If that has been done, and that will take some years from now on, we can again compare with our outcomings from this year.
What I then really would like to do is what the galimulator is doing in a bigger scale but less variables.
To change some settings and look what changes happen.
It feels like dwarf fortress in space.
In the galimulator the interesting thing is, that races can go into ascension and vanish. It feels (I imagine) it is like the older races in babylon 5. And that is something I wished back in Distant Worlds 1:
First: Another layer, where a new dimension where a gate is opened to. In galimulator some explorers visit another galaxy and they could come back one day.. in master of orion the threat is coming from another dimension. So we could also use some nice portal where we fight the shakturi at.
in master of orion (was it only III?) you could send a fleet to look for some Antaran X's.
then, a race also could reach ascension state. Also, the remaining peoplpe could influence the younger races (yes, like bab 5 again).
and back to my dreams I had in DW1: To read the LOG of every ship in the universe.
Like in Dwarf Fortress all those Legends are told/calculated.

But what we can already is enough for me right now.
What has to be done right now is still: hunt the bugs, the repeated messages, the game breaking/immersion breaking things that we stumble upon.
This game is in a very good shape now.
So while this huge system of yours is for me unplayable,
I am going to start a very small universe where I set everything on auto and try to do a roleplay. So I command a ship (like the voyager in an unknown sector) and hunt some prey, discover new races and so on..
also, I want to create a universe where the huge amount of resources is rare and where that is the biggest task: Get resources to build and expand and fight and explore :-)

So my next games are micro instead of macro. Now that macro runs good, I am going to play a universe that is big but has not much resources to offer. Starting from scratch. But I always start it easy, I like walkthroughs.
And I switch the story off, even the shakturi is off, just every race once. Without pirates.
I wonder how that will work out :-)

I did let it run for a bit, since i was interested to see if anything else would happen to my system other than turn into an enormous heating...

I found the whole thing a bit overwhelming to be honest, who am i what am i etc etc , decided to give to the ropes to the AI and let it run from there

When your system get's as hot as mine did, it is actually not really entertaining to really delve into a game such as DW, even with headphones the sound is pretty annoying.
I think the newest intel update does manage to upgrade the ultras with all kinds of new goodies, lower powerdraw and high output and such but i have yet to test this for myself..

Also, i think DW2 start to show its age :-p
I guess i will be waiting for DW3 for the more organic approach
