retrofit of special ship roles?

Post by zebanovich »

I made 2 roles of escort, one "patrol" and other "heavy" (hulls from construction tech), then I build a few of patrol escorts and set them to auto.
issue is that they retrofitted to heavy escorts even though they should have retrofitted to new patrol escort.

How do you resolve this in your games?

Basically nothing. You can have only one role for any Ship class except you want to retrofit every single Ship manually.
I guess they did the devloping and testing with 1 Planet and max. 10 Ships since than its no big issue...but if you first get hundred of ships....

So basically you need to choose what you want..Patrol or Heavy and go with this one Hull.

This doesn't make sense, every hull has a level, so for example patrol escort is level 1 and heavy is level 2.
So the issue is that researching new tech basically gives you an outdated hull (level 1).

But that's not how it's supposed to work, because in fleet templates we can specify exactly which hull to build, the only issue is with retrofitting.

One solution I come by is to set retrofit to manual for specific ships in the designer, but this bring new problem because this way you can't retrofit entire fleet, instead each ship needs to be retrofitted manually which is a pain, otherwise they're all retrofitted to highest level hull which defeats the purpose of a special hull because it upgrades lower level hull to higher level hulls even though both are latest, valid and desired designs.

Doesn't make sense but that's how it works. They will tell you this is WAD but being able to define multiple roles and upgrade paths for a hull is high on many peoples wish list.

Based on the road map, this area should get some love!

I think they will, at the very least, have the game auto retrofit to the latest same Hull Id (Sub Role, example: Role 'Destroyers', Sub 'Role' Fast, I.E. Fast Destroyer).

The game as it is now, allows the player to manually retrofit a ship from any active design to another design as long as it is within the same Role.

For fleet templates, as it is now, the game only cares about the Role and will retrofit across sub roles to yield the resulting specific design if it is defined, otherwise it uses the lates design of that role.
Caveat emptor, you could down grade retrofit to a previous generation design if it is still active, and the game will do that if it is the 'last design'.
I've proposed concepts that would go further than the sub role as a retrofit line and allow the manual designs to explicitly define a design predecessor, which, would enable describing and referencing design lines.
And hence allowing for multiple variants within sub roles. That is more complex and would require extra effort.

I postured for strict fleet template retrofits but an option for allowing for the more in game expensive existing loose cross hull sub role retrofits would be a preferred way to go.

good to hear, where can I find the roadmap thread?

Each fleet can have a one of each class of ships... that is the easiest way you can manage several roles of each class in the game currently. So if you have smaller fleets you can tailor them to specific roles and have many different ship roles of the same class, you only need to update the fleets and the ships will update to the ship type you specify for each class.

Another way is to use the ship designer and use the Active/Obsolete and Manual/Automatic functionality. Set them all to manual update. When you want to update one of them you obsolete all three and the one you want to update to Automatic, make a new version of the one you want to update and put it to Manual.
Once all ships of that role have updated you can do the same with the other or just set them back to active from obsolete again so you can build them.

So... yes you can do it... but it is not super convenient... but certainly better than manually update ships. I usually have two explorer type ships for example. One classic explorer and one scout version all automatically updated this way with no issues.
