WEGOWW2 Game Engine: Film/AAR Upgrades?

Post by bcgames »

We've heard from those who think the Final Film/AAR is a waste of time ("I don't watch...worthless"). For those of you who do find value in it--what would you recommend to upgrade/expand its usefulness?

Thx

From my perspective its a series of snapshots but the without a golden thread that ties everything together.
Its actually hard to explain but to me its being able to piece together a comparison between what I tasked my units to do, versus what they actually did (and why). At the moment it takes too much interrogation to determine what happened.

And so. Let's start again. What would you recommend to upgrade/expand its usefulness?

I don't currently find much value in it (in its current iteration) - so someone else might have to tackle that question.
None the less happy to share my thought process.

Bottom Line Upfront - Symbology is needed to make the AAR more of a battle tracking tool.

What is the purpose of the Film/AAR?
An After-Action report for me, is a summary of the turns events that are depicted using visual cues providing clear and concise snap shots of the turn's events.

Who uses it?
The player and his/her audience. Or for the sake of a mil game the commander (player) and their seniors and/or subordinates.

Why do they use it?
To inform the commander (me) what just happened and allow me to infer why events occurred in the manner they did. This is then used to help determine my next course of action.

When do they use it?
Used at the end of a turn, when many units have moved, some great distances and some taking routes never tasked. It is also used to inform the next planning cycle.

Where?
It covers the whole battle and every unit.

How?
At the moment you click 'play' and watch units move around the map.

Conclusion
In order to effectively communicate the battle unfolding I think there needs to be symbology on the replay.
If a unit is moving down a road an arrow which denotes that movement. If the unit then comes into contact, a symbol to represent that event. Then if your unit falls back a symbol to demonstrate that.
By the end of the replay, I would expect the map to be pretty busy with lines and arrows (like the planned movement phase).
The use of filters would allow me to control the amount of information on display. - including a filter by unit, rather than event type. This would allow me to follow the 'events' of one unit's turn in the war.

This goal would be achieved when I can put a person, who hasn't played a turn, but with an understanding military symbology, in front of the AAR and they can back brief to me.

As ever hope this helps and apologies if this is not what you were looking for or is teaching you to suck eggs.

In the same spirit, maybe a little simplistic "logo" on every battle place with a simple view of the result (+ or -) with no details. only to have a generic scan view of the general situation.

Can you expand on this idea? I think we do this now...or maybe I'm not trackin' on the proposed concept. Thanks.

Without necessarily reaching the level of detail of the battle reports of each attack of the turn, perhaps a numerical data which would appear above the battle with a quickly visible appreciation (in % or +/-) which would indicate in real time the result of the engagement in progress during the replay /and/or fixed at the screen of end of replay... a little with the manner of WITE or DC series (?)... does that answer your question?

you see what I mean in the newest Flashpoint southern front (video gamaplay). It seem be possible in Wego system there (light pop after each combat results in the resolution phase)...

Haven't jumped in to Flashpoint Campaign: Southern Storm yet. Definitely on my "Must Buy" list.

FC SS is not "very expensive" its only $60. Defiantly not exaggerated.

One of the best, easiest and smoothest UI 's for a war game I have ever used. (I have been playing war games since 1977, started with PC war games in 1995).

It really is the benchmark for WEGO systems.

Opening screen.

Zoomed in a bit.

Slight change of UI.

The biggest difference between FC and the WEGO Stalingrad/Desert War is in how the UI handles and the intuitiveness of the game. Without even reading the manual you can jump right in and start playing FC and then read up on something if you have a question, you have tons of staff reports at your fingers and hyperlinks to to stuff in the game itself.

I have no ho struggles just jumping into FC games and learning and playing but with the Stalingrad/Desert War I am still totally lost, in the UI and how the game play works.

Which is a pity because I enjoy both topics.

However I support both Stalingrad and Desert War hoping to get into it some time.

To be completely fair and honest I am going to give Desert War another shot and try to learn the UI and game play.

I am just a sucker for North Africa...lol

WEGOWW2: Desert War 2 at brigade/regiment level with 2500 meters per hex and all the engine upgrades might be an interesting addition to the series someday.
