Air war comparisons and questions

Post by hyperstork67 »

Hello, I have been enjoying my purchase but had some questions about aerial operations.

1) I noticed after week one that my bombers (Axis) had huge "kill" totals compared to the fighters. Does the game count "on the ground" kills in this number?

2) Is there any way to conduct my air raids one by one, or do they all have to be pre-planned and occur "hands off" in the resolution phase? How about in the original War in the East?

3) I like the text file output but I notice it doesn't tell me what pilots are doing what, just says "Bf 109 F-2 is firing" etc. Is there a way to find out what pilots did what?

4) How long do pilots remain wounded? Is there a way to find this number?

5) are my pilots real names that fought on the Eastern Front, or just random names?

6) Does the original War in the East allow for any of the air-related features above that WITE2 doesn't? I thought of getting both to compare.

1)seems like
2)need to be planned
3)not realy, looking at pilot lists the the AirGroup and adding the information of the "Battle Result - Air Combat-Tab" may be the closest we can get
4)no idea, but afaik they don't count towards your RDY pilots, so if you get new ones your AirGroup will do their mission as usual, even with 10 "Wounded" pilots in the list
5)no idea (commanding officers of the AGs are not in them)
6)no idea

RE: #3

Internally the game has more information than it is is emitting to text. In particular, certainly/confirmed the battle ID and probably the airframe ID or the pilot ID.

I had pointed out to Joel, that as a battle analysis tool, the text log is of little use without the battle ID. Certainly a tool could be developed in Microsoft Access (open sourced, and distributed as an EXE) using relational database technology to "drill down", "roll up", and "filter". Similar tools have been done for the WITP-AE community with MySQL I think.

But whether 2by3 would put it on the list to include more information in the log basically came down to whether I would commit to implementing such a community tool? Sadly no, I just don't have the time for a big coding project and its support at the moment.

Well, darn.

I tried ignoring the air planner and doing every mission by hand, but, yes, not knowing what pilot is doing what during the result phase is frustrating.

Are any features I mentioned working in the original War in the East? I don't mind going old school if I can get a little more control or data on this subject. I like EDTBTR but I'm really itching to play an Eastern Front game.

I would like to know the answer to (4) as well.
Wounded pilots will remain with their assigned air group unit and will eventually be healed and return to flying duties.
Wow, that was the opposite of being very informative.... :(
Following is not helpful either... :(

Or maybe they are given similiar chances as "disabled" manpower to recover? (this is just a crazy guess...)
At the start of each friendly logistics phase, 25 percent of the amount in the transit pool is moved to the available pool. This represents the lost time from the front of lightly wounded soldiers and damaged equipment.
Approximately (with the exception of AFV ground elements – see 26.1.4) 25 percent of the manpower and equipment from damaged ground elements are returned to the transit pools each turn. Over time these will move to the active pools and become available as replacements in future logistics phases, representing wounded troops that are lost for short periods of time before being sent back to units, equipment that has to be repaired at non-divisional repair facilities that are then sent back to different units, and men transferred from one unit to another
Or finally... maybe there is something in the WiTW manual about wounded pilots?

AFAIR in older GG games wounded pilots gets a varying number of turns assigned to them when they will recover.

Any ideas what that number would be? Like DIE(15)?

You do know the devs, right? You guys talk?

Yes, that would be great to know!

Watching videos of the original War in the East seem to show that individual pilots are not tracked, unless I missed something.

Another dumb question(s), since I was asking for comparisons to the original War in the East:

1) I see that War in the West does track pilots. Can you execute/play out air missions on your turn in that game, or do you have to wait for an air phase to resolve them all and get the results, like War in the East 2?

2) I'm assuming the original War in the East does not track individual pilots/names?

Thanks.

This might give an indication if analysed (taken from a game):
