Artillery/Combat Range(s)

Post by Dereck »

My feeble memory can't recall if it was here or on another forum where it was mentioned that combat goes through phases with ranges. Does that happen with WITE2 and if so, does anybody happen to know what the combat ranges are that are used? (i.e, 5,000 - 10,000; 10,000 - 20,000, etc)

THanks
PO2 US Navy (1980-1986);
USS Midway CV-41 (1981-1984)
Whidbey Island, WA (1984-1986)
Naval Reserve (1986-1992)

Yes, you do have tactical rounds if you care to watch them at the higher detail levels. According to the manual anyway the game code determines the opening range at which combat rounds will start taking place. This is largely based on the nature of the defender's terrain, with battles in city and urban hexes commencing at shorter initial ranges. The attacker fires first at ranges of 3,000 yards or greater, while the defender begins firing at ranges of less than 3,000 yards. Then with each tactical round the ranges eventually diminish to about 50 yards assuming neither side breaks off the engagement and with long-range artillery still pitching in now and then. Depending on the terrain and the nature of the guns involved it's not uncommon for attacking artillery to start doing its thing from about 15,000 yards out or more. The ranges tend to be quite variable from round to round, not fixed or predictable other than diminishing in size.
