1944 campaign against the SOV AI - recommended settings?

Post by SchDerGrosse »

Contemplating on playing a 1944 GC as Germany.

I have few questions for my fellow WitE players:

- what is the general view of this campaign? Is it worth playing? Does it give an enjoyable experience?

- if so, what are the recommended settings for the AI? I am a semi-experienced player and usually play on "challanging" diff. when controlling the axis forces. I was thinking on leaving everything on NORMAL, with an open theater box to have the option to move stuff around. Should I bump up SOV morale to 110 so the AI can do its usual magic tricks and not be constrained by the regular movement and other rules?

The reasoning behind NOT putting it on 110 is, that maybe with careful theater box management I can turn the tide by pocketing and destroying SOV units and get to the last turn with a quasi victory on the east (while the Allies are knocking on the doors of Berlin).

Would NORMAL difficulty make the game too easy (by way of the AI completely fumbling after a few turns due to it not being able to teleport stuff around and thus react to the evolving battlefield)?

Id like a challaning game, however I would want to avoid a situation when my only option is to create the great wall of china behind a major river and spend every turn fending off russian attacks on the same hexes for 50 turns.

Thank you for your insights!

You could try it on Challenging.
The AI is not great at attacking, it is probably going to give you opportunities to cut off spearheads and not push hard enough when it should.
My suggestion would be to play the late scenarios from the Soviet side rather than Axis.
The lark, signing its chirping hymn,
Soars high above the clouds;
Meanwhile, the nightingale intones
With sweet, mellifluous sounds.
Enough of Stalin, Freedom for the Ukraine !

Thank you for your reply.

The reason I was asking whether anyone had experience with this particular campaign is that a GC requires an immense amount of time commitment (especially considering the fact that I am chronic "micro-manager"), and I would really want to avoid any of the below two situations:

- the SOVs turn out to be a complete pushover;
- they become Space Marines where a single Ski Battalion can stomp even the best German units (thats an obvious hyperbole of course), which would result in the defending behind the great wall of china as the only viable strategy as mentioned earlier.

As for playing the Soviets. On the one hand I have 0 experience with the Red Army, and on the other hand, the dire conditions that characterized the late war German war effort always appealed to me.

Long gone are the days of a uniform high quality army, and the Wehrmacht is a mixture of absolute trash divisions, ad hoc formations and the ocassional elite/and or fanatic units of the Waffen SS. Also, you get to play with some very interesting military equipment.

I dont know whether you can tweak the game to get an enjoyable game as the axis player against the late war SOV AI.

Regarding the rest of the possible campaigns:
- the 1945 campaign is just putting up an impenetrable defenence and wait for the clock to run out;
- the 1943 one is pretty winnable (from what I read on the forum) as the Germans are still in a good shape and control vast amount of territory;

So, this is where the 1944 campaign would (theoretically) come in.

Has really noone tried these campaigns who could give me first hand experience on how they play out?
