Rebasing aircraft

Post by DTomato »

I still don't understand how to rebase aircraft. The AI Assist option is turned off in our PBEM. Does this mean that AOGs won't rebase automatically?

If I have to rebase manually, what are the exact mouse and keyboard command that I need to rebase an AOG -- or an individual squadron -- from one airbase to another during my turn?

press the "a" key (to make the AOGs pop up). Then click the specific AOG you want to move an air unit from (in this case I have chosen the AOG Koluft 3), and the AOG should show which airfield(s) have air units that belong to that specific AOG (in this screenshot this AOG only had air units at the Vyazma airfield). Click the airfield that shows it has units that belong to that AOG (Vyazma has 4 reconnaissance air units stationed there from this specific AOG). when you click the airfield- a list of those air units pops up. Notice when they pop up they have a green outline per unit. if you click a specific unit from that airfield its outline will turn yellow- that means you have chosen to potentially move that specific air unit (note you can highlight as many as you'd like to move if they are all going to the same airfield of your choice).

Now scroll around the map to find an airfield that you want to move that unit to and move the mouse over that airfield and once you have chosen that airfield press the shift key and keep the "shift key pressed". you'll then see the computer will show you that the air field(s) that are available in the vicinity of your mouse "arrow". then once you have decided on a specific airfield to move to, simply (with the shift key still pressed down) press your right mouse button. Then it will ask if you want an immediate or a planned transfer (or cancel if you change your mind). the screen shot shows the 4 air units that belong to Koluft 3 and I have highlighted the top one (of the 4 total) which is "2 (H)Aufklarung GR 32"to transfer. Note:you can move air units to different airfields in both the Air phase and ground movement phase. On a more advanced level- its tricky (because the user interface is not friendly in this case) but if 3 different airfields are in close proximity and you want to choose one specific one (out of several choices the computer is giving you) you can sometimes cycle through them to get the unit transferred to a specific airfield on you want- like if you're the Axis player in the Leningrad area.

Thank you! That's the best explanation I've seen.

I don't see an option for immediate transfer. The destination airbase turns yellow, and when I click on the base, it says "air groups in transfer." So when does the transfer take place? After I execute the Air Phase?

Right when you're finished right mouse clicking- check the top right of your screen and it will show the AOG (Koluft 3) with a button that says " transfer (1)". It says one in my case because I'm only transferring one unit-- click that transfer button and then it will give you your 3 choices (immediate, planned, cancel). To be honest, I've never used planned, I always do immediate, and when you choose immediate the air unit moves the new airfield right when you press "immediate" (note in some cases - the air unit does not transfer when you press "immediate", this is because for various reasons the air unit is not eligible to move- though I think I've only seen this on turn Axis air turn 1 when trying to move certain Hungarian air units to different airbases). Planned might have to do with waiting a turn- but when the Air unit moves- it may arrive with the proper number of support units- whereas as an "immediate transfer means the mechanics/support personnel/spare parts wont be with the air unit when it arrives at the airfield (unless its a busy airfield that is already in heavy use- ie, you may be able to share other units support personnel), so they will potentially fly missions (if they have enough fuel) but won't repair damaged planes at the same rate as they would if they had the proper support - the support will eventually arrive- but it may take a few turns to catch up to the air units new location. Yah, if the AI air assist option is off for your game- you are going to manually run the Air show.
