Taking over a game

Can someone please explain to me how this works?

My opponent is not continuing the campaign, but another player would like to take over at that point.

For a PBEM game, all you need is the player's password for the game. For an MP game, the only way I know how to take over someone's game would be for the old player to give their login info to the new player. I'm not advising that, just speculating how it could be done.
