Scenario Building

Post by rniles1149 »

Love the game!

Trying to build a new scenario based on the various Crimean battles/campaigns during 1942. I’m using the 1943 campaign map, cropped to include only the Crimea, the area immediately north, and the Taman Peninsula. I’ve created national supply sources for the Germans and Russians at Nikolaev and Krasnodar, respectively. Once I try to play the game, however, these NSSs seem to degrade themselves into “temporary depots.” Perhaps as a result of this, the hexes in the Crimean peninsula itself, which started out controlled by the Germans, are still controlled but now marked “isolated,” which creates big ramifications. The whole thing is kind of maddening, but I’m sure there’s a relatively simple explanation for it. Can you help? Thanks!

You need to have 2 NSS's that are linked by a working rail line. You can make some small town nearby each a NSS, and just limit the amount of freight the NSS gets (the freight level for the city, which is in 1/4 ton increments, IIRC, so 1000 means it will start each turn with 250 tons of freight).

Joel,

Thanks for the insights. I’ve tried to implement them, and in my work I’ve tried to emulate the introductory Velikie Luki scenario as much as possible, but I just can’t seem to get it to work. The rail networks for each side seem unstable, e.g., they change from green to yellow from in the editor to actually playing the game. I have created NSSs in Nicolaev for the Germans and Minskaya for the Soviets with what would appear to be clear rail links back to Vienna and Moscow, respectively, in the editor. But when I try to playtest the actual game , the railroads degrade to yellow, and the supposedly owned hexes then become “isolated.”

I could send you the scenario file if you want to have some people look at it. Maybe there’s a coding issue in there somewhere, but I think if a few glitches like this could be fixed unique scenario building would become much easier and that in turn could energize the community.

Thanks!

The 2 NSS minimum must both be on the cropped map and I think must be connected by rails on the cropped map. Zip up your scenario and attach here if it still doesn’t work.

Joel,

Thanks so much for the quick response. It works! I guess I didn’t understand that both NSSs on each side had to be connected via rail, and both needed to be on the playable scenario map.

I’ll have some fun creating this, and I think it may be a good introductory campaign/scenario for newbies in the future when I’m done.

Thanks again for the help! I’ll send you a copy when I’m done…😎

Glad it worked. Good luck with your new scenario. In the next update (now in testing), we've added the following game option:

• New Game Option – Amphibious Invasions, with 3 settings:
o STANDARD (default) – no change in amphibious invasion rules
o LIMITED – Only hexes in the regions of Crimea, Georgia, and Krasnodar may be targets of an amphibious invasion (Ctrl-m shows all regions)
o NONE – No amphibious invasions are allowed

Thought you'd be interested.

Joel,

Thank you! I do intend to incorporate the Soviet amphibious landings on the Kerch peninsula and at Feodosiya in one of my Crimea scenarios…

But now I’m onto the Air War portion of the scenario…and I’m lost. The description in the WITW editor manual doesn’t even begin to explain the complexities involved here. It’s hard to know where to start. Do I build air bases in locations first? Do I create “air units” first, then “air operational groups,” then command units like a Luftflotte or a Fliegerkorps? All reporting up to OKL I assume? Looking at the introductory Velikie Luki scenario doesn’t really help me all that much… Any suggestions or documents you could point me to?

Appreciate any help you could provide. Thanks!

P.s. Have I corrupted my files, or is this a bug? In the screenshot showing creating/editing an air operational group there’s something like an airfield entry (Idritsa) ghosting in the background, and it is clickable…

I'm moving this to the scenario design and modding area where hopefully someone will help you. I'm away on vacation now and it would take me some time to try to figure out the answers to your questions as I've forgotten everything I once knew about air units and AOG creation. :D

hey did you ever get an answer on these, or figure them out? Am playing with the editor for a possible Bagration scenario but the air ops are, as you noted, very complex and very undocumented in the witw editor manual.

Yes, I did get some answers and some of the things I figured out for myself. The scenario I’m working on is working pretty well now, and I’m simply refining it to try to get it to perform somewhat historically. I’m going to post a question on the forum shortly related to how to get the AI to do certain things you want it to do.

If there’s any way I can help you through your issues, let me know. I’d be happy to help.
