Command LIVE moves Far East! Spratly Spat announced!

Post by Daniele »

The South China Sea is an area where the economic and geopolitical struggles bubble just covered under the surface. Numerous low-intensity conflicts have erupted over the years, and many countries have tried to extend their territorial claims over key islands and atolls.

In particular, domain over the Spratly Islands have been strongly disputed by China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines and other nations. The large reserves of oil and the huge volume of maritime traffic make this area crucial to the regions balance of power.

China, the strongest player in this delicate game, has recently strengthen her sea power, deploying her first aircraft carrier - the PLAN Liaoning – with the clear intent to achieve definitive military superiority, dissuading her rivals from direct military action.

However this deployment itself has disrupted the balance of power. Could it lead to an escalation that ends with open conflict for regional supremacy?

Command LIVE: Spratly Spat, the third installment in the ambitious Command LIVE series, will explore this fictional – although perfectly credible - situation!

A full analysis of the situation has been dispatched and it is already available!

Stay tuned! Command Live: Spratly Spat will be released on September, 20th!

Get more information about the game from its official product page!

Looks awesome! I cant wait till next week to try it out!

Also, looking at what has happened in the past few weeks and what I just saw online, I think it is clear what the next LIVE scenario should be about:

Really looking forward to it.

One small 'correction' (if not done deliberately), there is no 052C DDG named "Shenyang" (which is a 051C DDG of the North Sea Fleet). A suitable name would be Lanzhou or Haikou, the only two 052C classes serving in the South Sea Fleet.

Ofc, this could also be a deliberate change of name (yet again, Changsha is an actual 052D).

Small comment. I would think the ROC would not side with the US and ASEAN on this one against the PRC as the 9-dash line is a KMT concoction and they want the whole area for themselves too. But anyway, good effort and seems relevant and interesting.

Yeah, Taiwan/ROC would send some naval ships to guard Taiping Island/Itu Aba in the Spratleys, but would likely be neutral in any US/ASEAN vs China conflict, so that the other claimants wont get funny ideas about stealthily evicting them in the heat of battle.

They essentially claim the same maritime territory in the SCS, based on their understanding of them being the "only legitimate Chinese Republic":

Though it doesn't matter much now as the Philippines currently seems to distance itself from US and more reconciliatory to China. Interesting times.

So every navies around SCS want a piece from China, and ROC forfeited their own right of SCS claim for military support. If Taiwan really do this, that will possibly be the last thing they could attempt before the proper warfare burn upward to the entire Eastern Asia. Which will be chaotic.

While a bit unlikely, it is still a propable scenario.
Lately, the new ruling pro-independence DPP party in Taiwan was accused by their opposition and the Fisher Union as 'sell-outs' for their weak-ish stance against the Philippines and Vietnamese, and for 'buckling' to US and Japanese pressure. The result was that the DPP caved in and still sent some patrol boats to Taiping Island, as well as joining China in ignoring the PCA ruling. But despite this, there is sign that President Tsai and the DPP actively works towards the goal of shedding the last bit of 'Chineseness' in Taiwan, by forfeiting their SCS claim that they inherited from their status being the Republic of China.
Japan and the US would generously reward them for that, but not all Taiwanese would be happy, since the economy heavily depends on fishery in the SCS, and the Taiwanese held island remains a symbol of defiance for their already heavily embattled sovereignity.

I would say that the ROC forfeiting their SCS claims would only happen along with the ROC renaming itself to Republic of Taiwan, hence officially declaring independence and inviting war with China.

Optimistically say, it is possible for devs want to expand more events based on this scenario. If RoC decided to militarily interfere against China, what kind of conflict possibly be at Eastern Sea? It's also possible for another LIVE scenario too.

Like I said, it will be a chain effect from ASEAN to Japan, South Korea may follow because of the volatile situation of North Korea, and eventually Russia MUST intervene reactively at Far East.

This war will involved about 1/3 of entire Earth population at Eastern Asia, can you expect how ugly will be if being totally uncontrollable?

SCS is important to Russia because it keeps US forces there. Good part of any geopolitical strategy is keeping potential adversaries from being able to concentrate forces anywhere but forcing them to spread their combat power out.

The South China Sea is interesting because in the absence of a strong US presence there really isn't any strong deterrent to China if they get aggressive unless the regional powers are able to concentrate their power. Given it is election season in the US and foreign policy is impacted its a great thing to look at. I hope this scenario helps people think about that abit but also hope it gives them a few nights entertainment as well!

SCS is ultimately important to everyone, due to those critical shipping lanes in this globalized economy.

Will be interesting to see a situation where the US (among others) is up against a carrier without one of its own in the area, and a probable situation for the first real world operation for the Liaoning, if they decide to use her for more than training.

It also looks like this will be the first LIVE scenario with a stronger emphasis on a sea action, while the first two were, I think, primarily air scenarios.
