Battle of the First Salvo

Post by GBOATZ »

Frenetic and challenging scenario that kept both me as the US and the AI as Israel and Turkey pretty busy. However, I was curious as to why about halfway through the scenario I was chopped an Israeli SAAR flotilla when I had a large Battleship SAG of my own. The Israeli flotilla did not materially participate in any way that I saw. I guess had I encountered some serious damage to my Carrier and Battleship groups they may have had some had some effect? I particularly liked that the AI staged a little surprise in Turkey for a large group of pesky Badger Bombers that attacked my ships from the north [:D]

Although all the USSR ships were destroyed, my final score was 100 points, however I received no indication if that was poor, average or a triumph so I'm not sure either from my score or the scenario briefing if there was more I was to have done. Perhaps somewhere in the not too distant future some type of trigger as used in versions of Harpoon would appear, show an image or play music of some kind to indicate the end of the scenario or that victory conditions have been met? Instead when I searched around with still over a day and 3 hours to kill, that's when I used to the Scenario editor to see if there were any more enemy platforms that needed my attention (there weren't). However, overall, I was pleased with the detail and strategy needed to complete the scenario, but as mentioned in the briefing, if Survival from attack was the only criteria, then I am pleased as I only lost one aircraft. Hopeful you'll feel inspired to create more large scenarios like this one in the future! [:)]

However, I was curious as to why about halfway through the scenario I was chopped an Israeli SAAR flotilla when I had a large Battleship SAG of my own. The Israeli flotilla did not materially participate in any way that I saw.

I was staying true to the book. In subsequent scenarios I am leaning more towards being less literal to the book and more "playable". Some day I may go back and re-work this scenario with that in mind.

I thought I added a victory trigger that should have gone off. I will take a look to see if I messed this up.

Hopeful you'll feel inspired to create more large scenarios like this one in the future! [:)]

You want large? I'll give you large! Try this monster out.

I noticed in your expenditure log you never shot off the big 16 inchers on the USS New Jersey. You missed out on some fun! Shooting at Osa missile boats with 16 inch shells is the very definition of "overkill".

Thanks for sharing! I've got two more scenarios out from this book and another one currently in work.

Hi Yokes, Indeed I have already loaded your "humongous" scenario and I am playing it a little at a time. My biggest issue is that I've never been as good at Geography as I need too, so I'm spending even more time knowing exactly what my objectives are on the map than plotting offense and defense. So as well as strategy, I'm getting a primer in world locations! [;)]

I was in fact tempted to go over and shell the Syrian airport after defeating the USSR Group east of me to stop a lot of Syrian fighter harassment, but it was around that time I noticed the Badgers making steady headway through Turkey's airspace and I soon got sidetracked protecting my Carrier and SAG. Just as I suspected they eventually made their way through and then all HELL broke loose! Fortunately, early in the game I made ALL of my Tomcats Heavy Barcap and they shot down enough of the Badgers that my missile shield took care of the rest, although I must say that was pretty crafty/sneaky to then almost simultaneously have the Kirov group launch their missiles at about the same time! I was really worried for a few minutes, but luckily I prevailed.

Just for edification, was 100 points the maximum? If not, you don't have to state exactly what else as I'd like to replay this at some later date and go for a triumph!

I'll let you know how I do on your other big scenario once (if ever) I get finished with it! [:)]

Thanx for a great scenario!

GBOATZ,

A score of 100 is pretty much "perfect". Now try it as the Russians...

Hi and thanks for the update, points wise. And reversing sides and playing as the Russians sounds rather interesting. I don't know how fair it would be since I now know who's where and what's going to happen but perhaps that would be a good option for the future.

Right now I'm far more interested in your EPIC scenario that's already intrigued me to the point that I have four sheets of notes and need my laptop running next to my LCD Monitor to keep track of all that's going on! Looks like once the action starts its going to be a battle royale! Right now my focus is on setting up enough AI Missions in Southern Japan correctly to handle all the peripheral stuff while I concentrate on the three (3) major objectives you've outlined. Looks like I'll be pretty busy and doing a lots of Saves! [:)]

Take good care
