Exercise Exocet 23 "Search and destroy"

Post by TyphoonFr »

This scenario is based on Exercise Exocet 23, a training exercise built around a "search and destroy" scenario in which two forces clash in the Mediterranean Sea:
https://youtu.be/yD0qG1oPzKc?si=-ynn-J2XH3hof8Fr

4 ships, a submarine, 2 MPA, a few helicopters and drones in each camp, the same mission to destroy the other.

Your opponent has 8 ASM less than you, we will note the courage of the crew of Commander Birot (F-796), but you will have to be wary of the 76 mm Strales cannon of the Caio Duilio (D-554), its guided munitions DART are formidable in CMO then a few meters below the surface prowls the Duguay-Trouin [S 636] the latest addition to the Baracuda class, which has only one desire, to test the new F21 Artemis torpedoes.

For this scenario, I use the Operation Planner to vary the pleasures of the red side.

I have two problems, so ideas to solve them are welcome:
1/ The AI reacts strangely to torpedo attacks.
2/ The MPA planes with mixed loads (ASM/Torpedoes) continue their attack course towards their target after having fired their AGM 84K SLAMER and will die on the opposing defenses.

I'm using Steam version Build 1328.11 / DB3000 v502

Thank you in advance for your feedback

Salut Christophe,

Hi Christophe,

awesome! I'm intrigued by these Polaris exercises too. I read that it can hurt!
On the MarnAt sites, a Hawkeye is mentioned. Is it a design choice not to include it?

PS: the Scenario Briefing is missing.
The Realistic Submarine Communications option is deactivated, by design?

Hi thank you for your feedback
For the Hawkeye, it was intentional, I didn't know which side he was on and I may be wrongly thinking that he wasn't necessary.

I am taking note of the briefing, but I intend to add some random accidents which must also have taken place during the exercise, which will disturb the player (equipment failure, evacuation of personnel to a base on land, assistance in a ship in distress...)
This explains the civilian Dry-Bulk Carrier sunk and which was on fire when this version of the scenario was launched, and which I failed to remove

Realistic Submarine Communications: This is also intentional, the AI already has difficulty launching the right buoy at the right depth on an unknown contact and it takes it forever to identify an underwater contact, and what's more, it does so on a contact that you know friend... .
When your submarine is detected by a buoy, you know that it is your SNA but you have to make it "friendly" each time it is detected again so that the ASW elements stop bothering it.
If you attack order on FREE, it sinks it....
The only solution I found was a no fly zone around the SNA, but No fly zones also disrupt the AI.
If you have an idea, I'll take

In CMO, I noticed that the 'old' contacts disappear after 1h30 and as long as the contacts are not exactly relocated, these 'old' contacts persist even if friendly units are nearby and would normally allow them to be say that the contact is no longer there and must be deleted
Instead the AI will attempt to identify or attack these 'old' contacts. In 1h30, a ship at 28kts traveled 40nm

During my tests, I saw the AI waste all missiles on a position that my ships occupied the previous hour.
So in the scenarios, I have to make sure that this does not happen, such as limiting the drone patrol areas in relation to the weapons range, to limit the time between detection and firing.

The endurance of SMDM drones is normally 3h/50km, in CMO it can fly more than 4 days at 4800nm (it weighs 16kg carries 120kg of battery  )

For the MPA I tried all the settings, I resigned myself to dropping the mixed ASuw/ASW loading for a full ASW.

On the red side, I wanted to let the Suffren fire its SM39s to warn the player that it was there and that it was necessary to prepare to escape its torpedoes, this may have put its crew in danger I think.

Tell me if this is what allowed you to locate the SNA.

If you have time, do the test to see how much ASM missile it takes to sink the Caio Duilio (D-554), its guided munitions from its cannon in CMO are formidable.

How much playing time did it take you?
I see that the Ruby fired an SM.39, what was its target?

I imagine that the Rubis had fun sinking the FREMM and the Caio, what was the reaction of the ships to the attack of the Rubis topilles, the guy at the helm fled and the ship started going in circles?
And tell me who sank who
What happened with the F710?

Thanks again for your feedback
Christophe

You know we can suggest data updates, right?
If you don't want to do so, please shoot me a PM with the details you might have.

It was all but skill, of course....
Nah, it was sheer luck, as it drove all steam ahead above my Rubis, which was conveniently at full stop inside the layer, for the crew's afternoon nap, as the regulations dictate.

I don't remember, to be honest. I was on and off my PC. I'll check my log files.

F 781, pour le coup de grâce.

Well, they sank.

I did use the F710 as a lure, and they all were chasing it at full speed, and barely had time to react to the torpedo (which they tried to avoid iirc). They were charging like madmen, and I almost missed them as they quickly went through the torpedoe's effective range.

Could it be that you've observed their new torpedo avoidance drill, by the way? Dimitris, I think, posted about it on the CMO blog, IIRC. I'll throw you a link later on.

Edit: it might still be an issue. I couldn't tell during my gameplay though

Tiny log:
– Ships & submarines now attempt to evade incoming torpedoes more realistically, following these guidelines. Submarines will additionally alter their depth to avoid the torpedo(es) if appropriate.

And tell me who sank who
The Ruby-on-rails did all the heavy work on the ships.
The Poseidon did fish out the Barracuda, as I foolishly lost my ATL2, using it like an Etendard.

I also did lose my Caimans out of ineptitude, I did let them fly within the opponent's SAM ring. And, indeed, it controlled them all.

I probably won't use a Sea Control type of mission again, or at least dig into the doctrine settings to make them much more mindful of the surface threats, while they are chasing the little Mermaid.

What happened with the F710?
I needed a tar... a hero I mean.
