New scenario for testing: Saphire, 1977

Post by Stanley_The_Rolmate »

Sapphire, 1977

On June 27 1977, the former French colony of Afars and Issas gained its independence as the country of Djibouti.
At first, the FLCS (Front for the Liberation of the Somali Coast), a guerrilla organization fighting against French colonial rule, celebrated this victory and was partially absorbed into the new country's government.
But days after the declaration of independence, a splinter group formed calling for the integration of Djibouti into 'Greater Somalia'. After gathering support, the group launched their insurgency against the Djibouti government and French forces stationed in the country.
Somali leader Siad Barre had primarily been focused on absorbing the Ogaden region controlled by Ethiopia, but started shifting his focus to the newly independent nation.
On June 14, the French carrier Foch arrived in the Gulf of Aden as part of Operation Saphir II. In the past few days, Barre has made a series of widely broadcast speeches calling for the integration if Djibouti into Somalia and the expulsion of French forces from the country.
Somali forces that had been thought to have been preparing for an invasion of Ethiopia quickly deployed to the border with Djibouti. The French have started sending a large amount of reinforcements to Djibouti, but due to the limited infrastructure and short time frame, this has been difficult.
The first units from metropolitan France arrived a short time ago, joining a number of units airlifted in from French territories in the Indian Ocean. French intelligence has assessed that there is a high likelihood that Somalia will launch an invasion in the coming days or hours, before most of the reinforcements can be brought in.

Hi.

Thanks for the scenario. I wanted to try it but the simulation is very slow, what seems strange considering the AU count even for my crappy laptop.

Did you notice something similar?

Just running it I see constant spikes in pulse time >1000 and more.

A few typos could detect:

Description:

"integration if Djibouti into Somalia"

. missing at the end.

Briefing:

I suppose it is intentional, but all the description is repeated, though 1 line added in the beginning of the briefing.

Origin detected, it is the "too many eyeballs" bug what causes the slowdown, very significant at least in an old computer.

After running blu3s fix in the lua console the problem is resolved after removing the extra eyeballs.

Thanks for your replies! I've uploaded a new version with the extra eyeball sensors removed. The scenario should run a lot more smoothly now, though it will probably slow down a bit when the ground units start shooting at each other.

Great scenario Stanley!

Just got paid in spades for a bad decision (may have lost the scenario because of it!). Ourgan got nailed! So many good decisions to be made in this scenario.

I think my only gripe so far and it isn't on you. Used a ferry mission to get the Jags to Ambouti and the mission editor plotted around the Arabian peninsula. I'd just add a note for players to plot their way down or to keep an eye on that.

Great to hear you enjoyed the scenario!
Yeah, the distances between units are very small, so it's very easy for the enemy to catch them in the wrong place with no time to react.
That's a very interesting route, haha. I'm always worried that my no fly zones are two small and people will just fly around them, so in my mind I made them all way too large :? :D

Sorry to come late to the party. I just tried this out.

Lots of fun, but I wonder if there is an error on the scoring. I was getting -8 points (instead of 8) for sinking a Somali ship and -4 points (instead of 4) for sinking a Somali PT. Was this intentional?
