New scenario for testing: Vlakke Hoek, 1962

Post by Stanley_The_Rolmate »

I just completed this small and simple scenario about the historical battle of Vlakke Hoek, I look forward to hearing what you think about it.

Scenario description:
The battle of Vlakke Hoek was a naval engagement that took place on January 15th 1962 during the West New Guinea (or West Irian) crisis between the Netherlands and Indonesia.

During the battle the Dutch navy stopped an Indonesian attempt to land 150 marines near Kaimana.
One Indonesian torpedo boat was sunk during the battle and two others were damaged, a total of 39 Indonesian servicemen were killed during the battle
including the deputy chief of staff of the Indonesian Navy, commodore (posthumously promoted to vice admiral) Yos Sudarso.

Although the Dutch succeeded in stopping the attempted infiltration, the battle drew a lot of international attention to the ongoing dispute and was part of the reason for the subsequent involvement of the US and USSR.

Very Cool!

I read once that the Indonesians planned to attack the Dutch carrier Karel Doorman with Soviet-Supplied Badgers, but the ceasefire came down before the mission could be launched. Now that's a What-if battle i'd like to see.

Perhaps that next?

Thanks. I tried 2 times and got minor victories, but completely novice

I knew nothing of this battle so searched for some info, in the wikipedia one of the references link is broken, "Operation Trikora - Indonesia's Takeover of West New Guinea".

However can be downloaded in the volumen 5 available in pdf in this page:

This has already been made as a scenario IIRC. It is in the community pack. Can’t remember the name right now, but you should be able to find it by date.

Hello, thanks for the replies and feedback. I have made an updated version of the scenario that fixes some issues with the scoring events.

Yes there is already a scenario called "Operation Trikora 1962 Indonesia v Netherlands" from the Dutch perspective, I don't know if it's in the community pack though, but I downloaded it from the forum some time ago.

There aren't a lot of English sources about the battle, but there are a few Dutch sources on the internet that I used during the creation of the scenario:

This is from the second source cited in the english wikipedia, just in case is useful.

Dutch Sigint and the Conflict with Indonesia by Wies Platje.

NAVAL ENGAGEMENT NEAR ‘VLAKKE HOEK’

An interesting example of timely and accurate intelligence support is the operation against Indonesian motor torpedo-boats on 15 January 1962.

Intercepted messages indicated that in the evening hours, from the nearby Aroe islands, four fast MTBs would attempt to land a unit of 150 marines
on the south coast near Vlakke Hoek. Precise data on the deployment of the Indonesian motor torpedo-boats, the underway refuelling points,
the rendezvous embarkation point and the position of the Indonesian units deployed for diversion purposes was derived from analysis of intercepted Indonesian messages.

Three Netherlands destroyers were sent to the area in time. At 2030 three Indonesian boats were spotted heading north by a Neptune maritime patrol aircraft.
The fourth MTB was forced to withdraw due to mechanical problems. It was also known that as part of the operation an Indonesian tank landing ship would be deployed
in a more westerly area in an attempt to deceive the Dutch on-scene-commander.

One of the destroyers on a ‘so-called’ routine patrol spotted the landing ship and sent an ‘open’ flash enemy report. Most probably the Indonesian task group commander
interpreted the message as a confirmation of a successful attempt to mislead the Dutch units and that he could continue his northerly course towards the coast of New Guinea
undetected and safely. For the Indonesian Navy, the operation ended in a disaster. Two pre-positioned Dutch destroyers, soon accompanied by the third one, opened fire at 2100.

One boat sank immediately, two were badly damaged and reversed course. Many crew members and embarked marines were killed, among others the deputy chief of the
Indonesian Navy Staff, Commodore Sudarso. Some 55 survivors were taken prisoner.

This time the tactical use of Sigint prevented Indonesia hoisting a flag on Dutch territory and thus weakening The Hague’s position at the ongoing United Nations New Guinea
negotiations in New York.

After the conflict, the Indonesian General Hidajat declared that it was very remarkable that the Netherlands Navy knew the position of the Indonesian units. He was convinced
then that treason caused the dramatic failure of the operation.

This is the link to Operation Trikora scenario, however it is not in the community pack and it does not work in CMO.

Hi Team

yeah i made a operation Trikora scenario ages ago but have not updated to CMO. I dont think ill ever get back to it so happy of some one wants to update it. I tried to get it into the CMANO scenario database a few times but it didn't seem to stick.

I had some extra reference info i could dig back up as well. It was certainly a very interesting period of history that i didnt know anything about till i looking into it.

cheers

Hi Jorm,

Here is a copy of "Operation Trikora 1962.scen" updated to CMO v1.04 B1147. One complication was that the original used CWDB_474. Now updated to CWDB_492.

Can't say if any of the features are dependent having a licensed copy of one of the DLCs but the basic scenario seems to work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jorm for the scenario and stilesw for the conversion.

It loads in CMO now :)

So the .ini file is not needed? Can you do the same with The French Falklands scenario?

Hmmm. Something wrong with the Falkland 1978 scenario. When I make update changes it will not save them. Looking into it.

The original database was DB3K_414 but when updated it will not save. Not sure why.
