After several reloads and redoing the tutorial I figured out that my depot in Brest was blockaded.
 
I tried fixing this by placing a depot in a unblocked port but this still did not work.  I guess you have to have placed the depot in a port in a prior phase.

Brest being blockaded should not affect invasion supply (although it blocks sea supply and you would need another port already in supply before you placed a depot in a controlled port). Only there being anohter nation's depot in the same sea zone or not having invaded any adjacent land area should prevent invasion supply.

Could you please explain what impact the leader has on the outcome of a land combat?

Uhhhh hard question! Let's see:

1. Tactical Rating modifies the combat roll (see commander chart)
2. Strategic rating modifies the chance of a successful Outflank / Withdraw
3. Strategic rating modifies the chance of reinforcing an adjacent battle
4. Cavalry leaders modify the effectiveness of Pursuit
5. Tactical Max Rating determines the number of corps that can be commanded effectvely in battle
