Naval movement etc

Post by loki100 »

Am struggling with naval transportation - in terms of the actual mechanics

I can move a ground formation across the sea on a port-port style move by adding sufficient cargo ships to the 'division', at the end of the move just detach the cargo ships into their own division and repeat as needed.

What I can't work out how to do is much beyond that:

a) naval strategic transfer, I have a HQ with cargo ships, I select it as the HQ for a naval transfer, the map shows destination hexes but when I try to move the move order is greyed out
b) naval invasions, the port-port set up doesn't seem to work (ie the ground element won't disembark/invade) but if I try to load the land elements onto a transport only 'division' they won't load
c) related to (a) can't transfer reinforcement elements using naval assets

I'm sure the answer is obvious and I'm missing it, but ...

I think that you are doing the following:

You have a counter, with ships in it, that you are filling up with troops and ships. That is they are showing up like the types they are, and you are not loading an actual unit into the ship. This will work, for transporting stuff. In fact that is how carriers work, and allows for them to use planes from them. However this is not how you should do it...

(note pictures from my Ancient Europe mod).

This is how:

Select the symbol I have put the arrow towards on the graphic below.

Select the unit on the map that you want to load onto the ship. Must be either on the coast next to it, or in the port you are in. This is how it looks when the unit is loaded. Notice how it has the name of the unit on the counter.
Select Load 2.jpg

To unload it, select the unit, then the button that I have put the Symbol with the two blue arrows on it, that I have indicated on the picture below.
Select Load 3.jpg

Finally to unload it. Select a hex (either the port it is in, or a coastal hex next to it), and press the checkmark on the right side of the lower line. If you regret, select the symbol on the left side.

Note some games/mods don't allow you to invade the same turn you load onto the ship. You will always be able to unload in a port, no matter what. The unit always loses all APs when loaded onto a ship and is unloaded.

thank you - yes I was doing the reverse of moving the transport capacity to the land formations, not adding the land formations to the transport capacity
