Tutorial?

Post by ivanov »

I've just bought the game. The UI looks quite esoteric and clunky. Is there any ingame tutorial that would would explain step by step what should I do? There are training scenarios but I have no idea what to do. I know there's a manual, but for the moment I don't have a time to go through it.

Hello ivanov, thank you for your support! There's a few game play videos at the War Room forum, they are available via our websites Gallery too, see the link in my signature.

I do recommend you go through the Bootcamp scenarios, they are covered in those videos, albeit with the previous version. They are also detailed in the manual, so that would be the other option, get started with Bootcamp 1 and see the relevant walk-through in the manual.

After Bootcamps, there's the Teaching sets, that basically have the same reinforces Coy vs Coy battle through the decades, good fun, just playing them through via PBEM myself.

There's quite a few detailed and thorough After Action Reports out there too. Reading though a few of those can give some valuable ideas as well.

This should not be a difficult game to get up to speed with, while there is an amazing depth to it. Good luck [:)]

One suggestion I have is to ignore the icons at the bottom of the screen for now and use the menu bar at the top. I find it easier that way since you see everything at once along with the hot key. As you do that you will also see the icons light up. For example is you want unit bases off you have to hover over each button to see the tool tip but if you select it in the menu it will then turn the icon yellow so you can learn where they are a tad easier. Just my opinion of course.

As you use the menu, note the hot key for each menu item. And if and when you use the toolbar, note the hot key indicated in the button tooltip. Sooner or later, you might commit to memory the hot keys for your most used, favorite actions. I find it quite helpful to use my otherwise idle left hand to press hot keys than to always be reliant on the right hand mousing around from menu to toolbar only.

Hot keys!

I am reading through all the devs blog and documents at the moment and I am trying to prepare a Tutorial with slides; similar to the ones I've done for TOAW IV.

OK... I am on it. Have to get used to the different editors first.

a) the force (org) editor
b) the map editor
c) the scripting, e.g. events, .lua and so on
d) the general idea what I want to achieve/visualise with the slides

So, be patient folks... the Oberst won't let you down on this one either.

That is just brilliant, Herr K!

As it happens, it was my intention to create a Middle East 2.0 tutorial from "Long Road Home", depicting the French convoy at Algeria. But as events unfolded, I did not have the time for it, more crucial tasks at hand.

But here we go then. With a completely new (set of) scenario(s), right [:)]

Splendid! I can at least use the map and the org of it... saves me time... Still, have to get familiar with the editor 1st. The slides are a piece of cake then.

A little storyboard, following that French convoy around...? This actually begins to sound like a Linked Campagin, where, dependng on how each battle went, there is the next one selected accordingly. That cold be fun, too.

Cool your boots, Nokia & Sauna person ;) I 1st need to get comfy with the tools before I even think about a DLC... once I am able to achieve that for CSME... an EF II(I) tutorial sounds enticing to me, too. Glad I got the old CS series and five right into it again.

If I had the hardware, I'd do videos instead of slides... might check out a freeware video recording program on my much better suited laptop with 12GB RAM... but for the moment, 'slides, will have to do the trick.

There are plenty of freeware for video screen capture. OBS studio is freeware/open source, but you can probably find tons of them. :-)

Well, this game is not very complex so tutorialsa are less important. But for other complex games, video is a good way to do nice tuts imo...
