CSME - Updating from 2.0 to 2.3 - rare issue solved

Post by Rosseau »

I had the original CSME up to date just how I wanted it for years. I copied it to another drive and it worked fine.

Then I foolishly attempted to install the new 2.30 version according to the instructions. Unfortunately, the windows uninstaller would not uninstall the old version, so I did it manually. And now, when I attempt to install 2.30 it says I have an old version and it won't install. Even worse, when I try to install the original version I get the same error and lost the game completely.

So, now I don't have any version of CSME to play. When will I learn to leave well enough alone? I cannot even start from scratch and install the original that I liked - and paid for - from MY PAGE.

How should I proceed?

Hi,
most likely there are registry keys left in your system from the previous uninstallation, which now prevent a new installation of CSME.
Download, install and run a tool like "RegCleaner" and remove the registry key(s) related to CSME, then try to install the game again.

NOTE: This is in no way an official troubleshooting advice, so proceed at your own risk.

Thanks Schlonz, but no way am I going to mess with my registry system. I appreciate the response, though.

I've been with Matrix since the dark ages and never experienced this sort of thing when updating a game. I guess I am due for trouble, but somehow suspect the 2.30 release has been botched in some respects.

Ouch! I just want my old game back. ;)

Someone else had your issue in the forum.

They had to install CSME 1.0 again and then uninstall it.

Then they could install 2.30.

Thanks for the response, Jason. You are a busy fellow, and my issue appears to be rare.

Anyway, the problem is only 2.30 is available for download on MYPAGE, and I didn't make a copy of the old installer.

But if I can get my hands on 1.0 again, I will try what you suggested. Hopefully, I am not overlooking something obvious. I tend to do that these days.

You can install the 2.00 version and then uninstall it: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/28gdn07m ... 70e6c&dl=0

It should clean up your old install

Then install 2.30

Yes, it worked just like you said, Jason, and I have edited the header on this thread accordingly.

Here is my experience, for what little it may be worth:

1. Manually deleted all versions of CSME.
2. Install the 2.00 version on an SSD drive.
3. Run the 2.30 installer, which allows you to uninstall 2.0 within the Matrix 2.30 installer program. Done.
4. Version 2.30 installed successfully on hard disk.
5. Reinstall the 2.00 version back on an SSD.
6. The new and legacy versions can now both be enjoyed - "Have your cake and it eat, too."
