RE: BootCamp 1 Crash

Earlier today, IIRC, I had a cryptic e-mail message about logs. There was no indication in either the subject line or the message body suggesting any connection with the game. Just something like "here are the logs you requested", from a sender e-mail address that I didn't recognize. It looked suspicious, like many of the phishing e-mails we get all the time. So I deleted it.

Was that perhaps you?

Please, if you would, (re)send the log files, but this time clearly labeling them as Campaign Series Middle East log files, with contextual hints so I know who I am dealing with.

Also, please take a screenshot of Windows Explorer, showing the contents of your game logs folder. Since clearly you know how to take screenshots and post them here, please also post the logs folder screenshot here. It is important that the screenshot show the file modification times.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have experienced the very same thing when I end a game turn, and try to save it. I run XP on this computer, and I guess it must have something to do with this OS, as everything works just fine on my Win 10 loaded laptop.

One other thing: the LCG's works fine, and the game saves as it should without any crashes.

I have reported this issue to Matrix support, who are trying to help me with this. Log file, screen shot, etc sent over, but no luck so far.

Just wanted to let you know that others are experiencing this crash as well.

Yes. I did follow the steps as set out and sent off the logs to the address given. And just now I tried again by uninstalling/deleting everything. Re-downloaded the game,re-installed on the default(C)drive. Tried same scenario with the same result:

Is this an error message that pops up spontaneously? Or are you attempting something specific, like save the game? Or something?

Also, it appears that you are running XP. I hate to say it, but XP is no longer a supported operating system. I think that's clearly stated on the product page.

That said, we will strive to work through these issues with you.

Sorry. Didn't realise XP wasn't supported. So my problem. Should have looked more closely. And yes, the error pops up when I try to do a game save.

Actually the error pops up when I end the turn and the game prompts me to save as "battle".

What I said in the previous post. We no longer officially support the CS under Windows XP.

(I did conduct automated crash tests under Windows XP. No crashes. But yes, it has been a while since I played the game manually, as an ordinary XP user would. On the Dev Team, our last XP holdout junked his XP system and upgraded to Windows 7 earlier this year. Nobody on the Dev Team has been explicitly testing the game on XP under normal player conditions since. Which is why we dropped formal support. If we can't/don't test it ourselves on XP, we make no promises. Which we didn't. Again, see the Product Page.)

When you attempt to end a game turn, you really don't need to explicitly save it yourself. Just make sure that these options are turned on:

[*]Options > Auto Save
[*]Options > Backup Saves

With those options selected, cease attempting saves yourself. Let the game engine do it.

I suspect there is a file/folder path problem here, and XP is not dealing with it gracefully.

Despite your using XP, still, we'll see if we can work through the issues and get this working for you.

Luckily for you guys, I still have an aging XP system that I keep around for testing purposes. It is off the Internet, however. Seriously, running XP anymore is a grave security risk.

Okay. When that happens, pay very close attention to the suggested default save folder. The suggested default might be wrong.

If your game is installed in, say, C:\Games\Matrix Games\Campaign Series Middle East (which is what we suggest), make sure that the file save dialog defaults to C:\Games\Matrix Games\Campaign Series Middle East\saves.

Thank you for the screenshot. Unfortunately, the XP Windows Explorer doesn't show the folder context. I am seeing the expected files, but I don't see the folder context.

Also, I don't have access to my XP system right now. So I'm kinda winging it here right now.

Thanks for the quick reply, Berto. And thanks for trying to help us XP-users, even though the game doesn't support older OS' than Vista.

I will surely upgrade to a more recent OS in due time, but this ancient computer is not worth upgrading any longer, as I have had it for many, many years, and it is time to let it rest now [:D]

If you manage to solve this issue, I will be very happy and grateful. Otherwise, I will use my Laptop, even though I don't like playing games on that...

Thanks for all your help. The file save dialog does default to C:\Games\Matrix Games\Campaign Series Middle East\saves and Auto and Backup saves are both on.

Start game and play first turn then hit next turn.As you know it will want you to create a file name for the saved game, give it one and hit ok and it will throw a bit of a fit with the error messages you are getting. HOWEVER it has ( if its working like mine ) created the save game file and you can restart the game and continue on....you won't see those error messages again...its strictly a first turn thing or atleast it seems like it is. Once past the first turn its played fine for me.

Hey, thanks WaltM! [&o]

I'll see if I can recreate the problem here on my XP system to better understand why it happens in the first place, and how and why your workaround solves it.

Ahhhhh.......Luck would be the honest answer. I noticed that it had saved the game file so I opened it in game and found my first turn was there intact.

Just a thought, did you rename the battle file to something other than battle.btl. Or, you can't, the error pops up as soon as that dialog comes up, yes?

In my case the problem SEEMS to happen when the game tries to switch to player B's turn after the player A file has been saved. File name seems to have no impact on the problem. Once you have restarted the scenario you can hit next turn ( you will still be in player A's turn after restarting )and it switches to Player B's turn without problems. As mentioned earlier once past turn one if its working like mine you won't see the problem return for the rest of the scenario.

Whatever is causing the problem doesn't seem to affect the campaigns which run fine.
