Ok.. I just looked to make sure of the exact file you need to edit

First, You need to find you a program called QCLONE.. Some say you can use any text editor, as long as you have the footer/headers for the files in the base folder.. This is true, but QCLONE is so much easier to use and I believe you can find a copy of it at the SCO website.

You need to edit the text file Soldiers.txt. This file is located in C:\Program Files\Close Combat\Close Combat III\Data\BASE folder..  Look at the far left columns of the file and you will see several columns pertaining to grenades. The one called Grenade Weapon in particular. It should have the value 1. Change this value to 0 on whatever teams you dont want to have grenades. You can also limit the amount and type of grenades the next few columns to the left.If you change the value to 0 for the grenades you might take put a zero for all types of grenades that that row is refering to as well..
Not sure it will crash if you tell it no grenades, but yet still refere to different types of grenades in the other collumns. You will have to do some experimintation to get the desired result you are looking for.

It is possible I could be wrong as It has been awhile since I have modded but I have the Soldiers file opened up in QCLONE as I am typing this to make sure my information is as clear and concise as possible......

Remember to ALWAYS make a backup of the original file before you you edit them.It is highly advisable to make a backup of the Data/Base folder or atleast the particular file you are going to edit if you arnt going to touch any of the other files. Doing the following step above will save you much grief and frustration...  CC3 used to crash if you edited the txt files and made a mistake. I suspect COI will be no different.

Hope this helps....

Different files

You can't use the files H2H....unless you e-mail the files to your opponent. Very easy to do a basic mod like this.

The CoI even has a mod swap builder utility. Makes keep track of switching little files easier.

And Neil, you don't have to use Q-Clone, Microsoft Excel is the official choice. The headings for Excel are available at CSO.

Thats great. Thanks for your knowledge.

I just have another question now. Ive managed to eliminate all the grenades. Now, when i go to the Requicition Pool and look at the troops and details of there weapons i see that the troops have no grenades but have Anti Tank grenades and Riffle grenades. When i add them to the Roster and cheek there details again the Riffle grenades show but not the Anititanks??? So does that mean the Anititanks will be in use in the game or not? What id like to do really is to get rid of the Anti tank grenades all together but no matter how i tweak the setting they are still there. They obviously cant come under any of the end "grenade" titled headings. Any ideas which ones they are?

Many thanks with your help!

Andy.

Andy, I honestly don't know why in the world you want to remove all of the types of grenades. I certainly don't want to play it, but I'll help you do it. To a point. [;)]

Go to this post and download the CoI Data Workbook. It is an Excel workbook with all of the data files in spreadsheets with the most current and up to date header information that will assist you in your ....., err...., ahh.... quest. http://www.closecombat.org/forums/showp ... tcount=166

If you don't have MS Excel, search the web for Open Office, a freeware application that will open spreadsheets as well as any text document.

Also, throw away the Qclone that you are using and use the one from here instead: http://www.closecombat.org/forums/showp ... tcount=164 . This one matches the header information in the workbook for CoI and is the most correct version for the rest of the CC series.

One word of advice. Do not remove grenades from the Weapons.txt file. Bad things will happen. The game uses some of those for explosion effects and really, really expects to find them all nice and tidy in their respective slots.

Thanks for helping me!

For the updated QCLONE which one do i use? CC2-CC5 or RtB-CCMv3?
Also what do i actually need to Workbook for?

All i really want to get ride of is the hand grenades. But im now a little confused. Could someone confirm something for me? Firstly i tried to the make a backup of my Solider file and i copied it and put it in the BACKUP folder of my old QCLONE version and it get overwriten when i modify the one from the game DATA folder?
The Antitank grenades show in the Pool but when you llook at the deatils of the troops you have just moved into the Rooster and click on details all there Riffle grenades are there but not the Anititanks greandes. Does that mean there are there or not?? Is this due to me playing with the settings or is this on everybodies?

This is the first time ive tried modding a Close COmbat game so sorry for the lack of knowledge.

Is there anywhere where i can retreive to Original COI "Soldier" text file as ill have to now install it on my other PC and copy accross other wise?

Thanks for looking,

Andy

For what he was doing, my information was valid..If he was planning to start a full mod, ok well, ya's advise might be more for what he is looking for. As far as being the official choice..I still prefere QClone..
One word of advice. Do not remove grenades from the Weapons.txt file. Bad things will happen. The game uses some of those for explosion effects and really, really expects to find them all nice and tidy in their respective slots.

LMAO.. I do believe I hinted on the possible eventuality of this.. well, not so much about editing the weapons file, but all he needs to do is edit the soldier file. I have modded enough to know how quircky CC can be and if it is pointing to somewhere and the somewhere it is pointing to has null or has invalid data IT will crash most certainly...HENCE, the reason I always say to MAKE BACKUPS. I havent touched a mod tool since 2002 and did damn good recalling information that would be useful and applicable to this situation.

BTW.. I used the QClone that this link points to and it acts like it want to load a file but does not but yet my old version works just fine. For what He needed, the older version was again.. ok ....AS for the headers..  They look nice but still will use what im more comfortable with. If I start modding again (always that possibility) I might use excel and the updated headers.

FYI: Alot has changed since I stoped modding cc2/3/5.....hmmmm... Some will say .. What mods have you created? 1 failed experiment( learned alot so the failed experiment isnt really a failed one i guess) and 1 incompleted cc5 mod but I have helped SO MANY get started in the days of the MSN Zone..  Just had a thought that made me smile...... I remember Blabsky walking me through the old plug in manager scripts...  Gave me a crash course is script writting. LOL  Just affectionately known to me as " The Good Ole Days"

As for the things that changed.....I got my MCP and I got my degree in Client/Server programming.... Im pretty descent at C++,VB,SQL(cert. in admin)...  Why did I say any of this? Because being a programmer, I have a much clearer idea of whats going on behind the scenes on most games, CC being no exception. Wish I had a fraction of the knowledge I have now then. Would of been a more effective modder IMHO
