Is the game for me?
So far I have only found advanced tactics gold to suit my taste in war game. I am struggling to find another one to add into my repertoire. I wanted to try this game but I am worried if its replayability is only in multiplayer. How is the single player of this game and its replayability?
The war games that I got off matrix in my collection are:
Decisive Campaigns CB and WtP
Advanced Tactics Gold
Panzer Corps (vanilla, no DLCs or Afrika Korps yet)
Unity of Command
Of the games I mentioned so far Decisive Campaigns is a bit too complex for me as of the moment and never got the time to really learn it, Panzer Corps and unity of command is alright but I prefer something with random map generators like ATG. I just got into war gaming last year and I am the type of person who prefers Turn-based strategy games that would let me build up my army like purchase troops and all that and would prefer a random map over a scenario most of the time. I need suggestions/advice if this is a game for me or I should choose another war game.

RE: Is the game for me?
Hello there,
I am still in the process of really discovering CoH, but these boards tend to be very quiet, so ill give you my thoughts.
COH is an excellent turn based tactical game. There are plenty of reviews so I won't bore you. Solitaire is ok but the AI is pretty poor. So far I have won every time by miles. There is a a multiplayer on line option but the online forums and boards are usually completely empty, so you will need to link up to get a match via this forum or BGG. I had a GREAT experience on line with a very good chap.
It is pretty much all scenario based with a very limited random option, though you can design your own stuff.
Bottom line... This is a great game but won't meet your noted criteria.
If there is a demo, try it.
A recommendation that meets your needs exactly, but is not WW2 would be Battle for Wesnoth. It is turn based tactical war with linked campaigns, troop selection and development, random maps, AI, multiplayer. It is fantasy medieval but plays like Panzer Corps in a strange way. Don't let the skin put you off a great game. AND IT IS FREE FOR PC AND IOS.

RE: Is the game for me?
It is historically based, small unit tatics.
It is quite easy to learn and good tactics are needed.
There are no random battles, but there is some random elements which can change firefights every time you play them.
You can also design any firefight which you'd find interesting.
I think the AI can give a good fight depending on the setting.
I always set the AI to Hard or Expert for a good challenge.
This gives the AI extra units and CAPs.

RE: Is the game for me?
Ok, A part of me wants to stay with random and a part of me wants to dip my feet into scenario based gaming. Does it focus on the eastern front? I really want to try the game to get more knowledge on the eastern front and once I mastered that I will move into a more complicated one like Decisive campaigns until I am confident I could tame the beast that is War in the East.
Well my other concern is that if it is scenario based, is it alright to deviate from history and accomplish it my way? That is one of the reason why I really stayed away from scenario based because most games don't allow you to deviate from history

As it is tactical, using terrain and unit abilities are key to the game.
And the goals are small in scope, capture this or that hex, points for eliminating enemy squads etc.
Therefore the history of the theatre doesn't interfere in each small firefight.
It is very different from WiTE and those others.
No overarching strategic goals, just immediate goals and hectic battles.
There is a demo out now, I suggest you give it a try.

RE: Is the game for me?
What is the size of the game? Is the demo the whole game already and I just need to buy it to get a key? I wanted to try the demo but as of the moment I don't have much time. Will probably try it in the weekends or if I can't help it much longer and just get the game.

RE: Is the game for me?
Somewhat knowing the games you like, I'm not certain this one is for you. I have it and enjoy it though I'm not usually into tactical level games. The online play vs another human player is the best way to play but it does require both players to be online at the same time and finding an opponent can be a challenge. Solitaire play is ok.
Re historical matters: it is a tactical level game so while the battles are based on history, at the this level of play "being forced to play history" isn't really an issue. You have a historical situation with historical equipment. It is up to you what you do with it.

RE: Is the game for me?
I agree with Webizen. Your current games are strategy based. You should try Panzer Corps (which you own) as MP against real people - IMO.
I want to buy Decisive Campaigns CB and WtP someday. As for Unity of Command. I have it and the new DLC and I really like it [:)]
I have CoH AtB and I am hoping the next phase of the game helps me get into it more.

Finally have it and just re-downloaded CB and WitP. I am trying to figure things out and I am happy that I know the basics like finding my way around. My only problem is to try and see what to use and how to use my troops and which unit to attack and how to surround the enemies and all that. I think I am going to get this game and just save my money for the upcoming paradox games especially with Hearts of Iron Cold War and I still got HoI 3 on my backlog.
I am planning to take on smaller scope war games like Panzer Corp or maybe unity of command and then this and I will work my way up to something in the middle (DC series) until I could finally tame the beast (war in the east) or even try to play a conflict where my country was involved (War in the Pacific or something) then get to really try and wrap my head around hearts of iron 3 and move to the cold war era. I want to play the whole war from the view point of a soldier or some soldiers (this game) until I get the view of the whole war.
Last question though, anything manageable and not as monstrous as War in the Pacific that is set in the pacific?
My goal for this year is to become battle hardened veterans like all of you here [&o]

Pacific Games:
--Campaign Series: Rising Sun -- platoon scale combat in the Pacific.
--Strategic Command -- there is a pacific title in the series. Though the global war variant includes the pacific.
--Carriers at War -- simplified carrier combat
--Panzer General II -- there are good pacific campaigns for this released by modders. Go to http://www.panzercentral.com and look in the PG2 forum.

Pacific Games (part 2):
-- War Plan Pacific -- the whole of the war in the Pacific playable in a (longish) evening - really nice game
-- Storm Over the Pacific -- sister game to Time of Wrath / Fury - though I personally prefer Strategic Command(as mentioned above)
-- Uncommon Valour -- predecessor to WITP covering the Campaigns in the South Pacific - same basic system as WITP but a lot less daunting in its scope

RE: Is the game for me?
Will check those titles out. Thanks! I am trying to start with games at a manageable scale. Just got the demo to this game and will still give it a go. I fear on my progress of war gaming because even Unity of Command which looks simple is pretty daunting to me and the AI really surprised me. It looked like I could have encircled its units by the next turn and it ended up cutting my supply and putting me in a very difficult situation

Ooh... That sounds tempting - decent AI?
