Merry Christmas and welcome to Stalingrad

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

I'm pretty sure I've got all the kinks ironed out so I'm releasing this map along with 2 scenarios.

I added a couple named Leader units in each scenario to add another layer to the matches.
They are better quality units and may be needed at just the right point and time in a firefight.
But if the Russian destroys them, he gets victory points.
And the victory points for the objectives are not high values, so losing your leaders may lose you the firefight.
But you may have no choice.
Just another something to see how it plays.

Of course you have to play with the boardgame maps to get the full effect.
This map has not yet been converted to the giant sized boards, hopefully Eric can put together that little program he mentioned and it can be converted to hi-res.

Don't put these into the custom lobby firefight folder as they won't be available for solo play.
Put the scenario files into any of the original scenario folders, I use Awaken the Bear scenarios, and they will work just fine in the lobby.

This download cann be found in my linked firefights section at the top of the mods and scenarios.

Place the map files:

Stalingrad.los
Stalingrad_height
Stalingrad_Input
Stalingrad_Paper0
Stalingrad_Paper1
Stalingrad_Paper2
Stalingrad_Paper3

Into the matrix games/conflictof heroesawakening the bear/data/maps section

Place the scenario files:

Bread Factory #2, 3 files
The Kommisar's House, 3 files

Into matrix games/conflict of heroes awakening the bear/data/scenarios/ whichever section you choose.

The map is big, so feel free to use it in your own scenario designs and have fun.

Now on to have a look at some campaign options.

I can't wait to play it! Thanks so much for putting this together.

Now that we've got the demo wrapped up (as of 3am last night, fingers-crossed...), I hope to have some time to get the tool together that will allow you to create giant hi-res map files.

I've spent the last few hours working on the tool to convert PNG files to the .BYT files necessary for the giant maps. However my converter-tool is now experiencing the same out-of-memory problems I was having in the game that caused me to implement the .BYT files in the first place. Perhaps I need another converter to convert the files into a format in which they can be loaded by my converter.... Anyway, this will be a trickier problem to solve than I first imagined it would be.

Meanwhile, I would be happy to convert the Stalingrad map to the BYT format using the process I used for the other maps (this involves some Photoshop and Image Magic scripts and isn't something I can easily distribute.) Is the original artwork posted anywhere?

I just changed things up in my dropbox.
The download was getting a little large, so I removed the large map and firefight cards and put them in a seperate folder.
The original Stalingrad folder has all the necessary parts for the game.
The other is just extras.
Hope everybody's enjoying the fights.

Hi, can you please explain these two comments for me? Is there a board game map mod out? I can't find it. What are the giant sized boards you refer to?

I believe there in the patch, and i think there also for only the awakening the bear scenarios but i'm not positive. I cant run them.

Wow. Great job Jamm. These are flippin awesome.

Playing Bread Factory now.

Questions

I have the zip unloaded that had the various paper maps in the correct folder and the game loaded fine. Then I see there is a Stalingrad large map and Firefight Cards.

Am I to use these too?

Where do they go if I do?


Now if we could only get a better mix of specialty units, satchel charges, roadblocks, AT mines etc.... The counter mix is rather small at this point compared to the monsters such as ASL or even SL. I'd also like to have varying counters for the effects of damage such as pinned, panicked, foot stunned etc. CoH plays nice because of much of its streamlined approach, yet the ASL player in me is always seeking just a bit more depth. Maybe the boardgame of CoH has gone that way?

I believe the large map is if people want to make scenarios with it and the firefight cards are so you can read about the scenario and what's involved. You don't put them anywhere.

They are awesome[:D]... hope more scenarios come from that map.

Thanks Mo Reb,

I posted the large map there in case Eric ever had time to convert it to the Giant sized map tiles as I have no way at present to do it myself.
Eric asked for a post of the original, but I imagine he's pretty busy with SOS right now.

The firefight cards were asked for by some players for more of a boardgame feel.
They aren't required to play the game.
I modelled them after the COH boardgame firefight cards.

Yes sometimes I would like alittle something more in detail too.
Weapon cards would add the satchels, molotovs and magnetic mines which would improve and stay true to the system.

I'm sure as the game evolves, it will only get better.

There are many more Red Barricades scenarios budd, but I haven't had the time lately to design them.
But anyone else can have a go at them, or something completely new.

I'd sure like to play these against a human as the scenario The Bread Factory does not play out well as the Germans under the A.I..

Maybe you posted that before? The problem is that the reinforcing Ruskies take a direct path to the victory locations regardless of the abundance of terrible terrain. They spent all of their turns moving over rubble and through large buildings.

I'm going to wait to play the second one until I can get an online opponent so it will be new to me.

But again, the map is awesome and I appreciate all the effort this must have taken.

I'm still working on a way to automate the process of converting the giant maps. The problem I'm running into is that .NET is simply running out of memory in doing this operation. Once we get the final versions of the demo and patch out I'll hopefully have more time to work on this.
