need convincing

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

need convincing

Post by bill hunter »

hi fellow gamers , very infrequent poster here. just wondering about this game. in a nutshell what can it offer a veteran tactical gamer. bit of a combat mission nut and i realize this has an entirely different approach. still, it looks refreshingly different and i would like to lay my money down , but , some guidance would be appreciated.

Have you ever played any tabletop boardgames ala Squad Leader/ ASL?

The thing that appeals to me is a clear and concise set of rules where the results of your actions are not hidden nor decided under the hood. You can become familiar with most of the rules in a limited time, yet mastering the various nuances of winning within those transparent constraints is what makes CoH shine. There just aren't enough 'tabletop' computer games out there that have a tried and true system. Of those that are released at the tactical level, CoH is hands down the best imo. A well polished product, especially post release.

I think there is a demo if you want to give it a try.

thanx reb....much appreciated. in answer to your question , no im not a table top guy , strictly pc gaming since 1990. im aware coh owes its heritage to that genre. Some time ago i downloaded and breifly played one of the battlefield command games and to be frank was completely underwhelmed guess im trying to avoid that type of experience and for some strange reason never bother wit demos.
but bugger it , whats forty bucks ! mere money. ill post my experiences , thx again.

You're welcome. If you ever want a game against a human just shoot me a pm. I've been busy with a few other titles lately so I am due for some CoH online play.

I have to warn you though. I'm a terrible player.

You might fancy checking out an amazing AAR by Missouri Rebel ( the gent who answered your query above). It is a truly excellent report and will really give you a strong flavour of the game.

It's in the after action report section. A Beginner's AAR.

Oh go on, just buy it!

thankyou lads. home from work and currently downloading. the more i look into this the more intrigued i am. what i love about cm is that i can play what i see in front of me, intuitively. seems coh is considerably more subtle than that. any ways see how we go, by the way reb your avatar is familiar - sow perhaps - now thats a game , superb.

well . just a tad different and loving it. breath of fresh air. from the over the top splash screen to being dealt a rubbish hand ( auto rally and a mine defuse ? who dealt this garbage). missing on the 85%er, trying to track the phases etc.
indeed it is very nuanced. my one concern is once i have it sussed it could be time to move on , hope not and i have a ways to go yet. love the table top experience , even play with the chits and dye roll camera. what intrigues me is how such an abstract set of "rules" can at the end of the day successfully illustrarte its subject so well and how at the same time basic tactical principles have to be adhered to.

whats up with the update - bigger than the game!!! am i missing much without it- why we cant have the latest version on a purchased download is beyond me!

Oh my. Definitely get the update. I'm not sure what version you have but it has been vastly improved since release.

BTW, the real fun comes head to head.

You want to be on version 1.18. That's the latest version. Ignore the in-game comments ref which is the latest version. They can be misleading as they aren't always changed with each update.

We don't change the official version numbers for beta patches, so it may seem that the numbers are out of date for a while. However I think when V1.18 official I changed the version number within a few hours, so the messages shouldn't be out of sync for too long.
