How to read a unit? Combat Numbers Preference?

Can someone explain what the big white number on a unit means? Why does it change if you make the unit icon smaller?

Does it have anything to do with the Combat Numbers preference? (What does that do?)

And can you point me in the right direction as to where to find this info in the manual or tutorial? I thought I looked everywhere but I must have missed something obvious. Thanks in advance.

- I think because the numbers won't fit anymore so a graphical issue.

- No this is for the numbers that show in the combat screen versus dots.
