General Goofy Does Barbarossa

Post by warspite1 »

Okay I have never played a DC game, but have taken the plunge on this one based on the (mostly) positive comments so far.

This AAR is therefore (hopefully) going to take the form of a totally new player to the game system receiving advice and recommendations from other players - as a means to a) learning the game himself and b) teaching other newbs how to play this game.

Choices:
- I am only interested in playing as the Germans, so that is an easy.

So what would players recommend for other options? I think my preference would be for:

- Normal AI
- Fast AI Speed
- Fog of War - OFF
- Hide AI Moves - OFF
- Historical - ON
- Mild Winter - OFF
- Geneva Convention - OFF
- Easy Mode - OFF
- All option in the right hand screen - OFF

Comments on these choices appreciated!

in your first post screen shot you have selected to have on FOW, so as a beginner, making it harder for yourself etc

with Hide AI Moves - OFF just speeds up the turns tbh, but as you see where there have moved and not moved anyway with FOG off, i normally say leave AI Moves - OFF as well

post 14 is the easiest settings for learning the game imo, but others may give better or more correct advice as i'm only a tester not a real player either, but for me it was the ones i used to make the game / tests easier [;)]

This should be good. Warspite follows through with some very thorough AAR's. Having him learn the game in the process should be entertaining.

Thanks Warspite

It is very rare that someone disabled these settings.
But it's your game.

Looking forward to your AAR. [:)]

I think he may be doing this for the viewers to see what is happening on the opponents side, but it may reveal too much for a game such as this.

Did you have your heart set on that setting choice Warspite?

Sorry I appear to have confused the issue!

For beginners like me I wanted to show the screen as it appears when you open the game. I wasn't going to pick the options until I had the feedback - sorry.

I think that for a newb, FOW and Hidden AI moves ON won't help the learning process so I do not want to play with either of these for this AAR - unless someone suggests a good reason for going the other way.

a tick in the box puts FOW on not off, for me if you want to show a AAR, it's good to see where all are imo, then again you know a lot more about it then me tbh, regarding Hidden AI i leave the tick in the box as i'm not bothered about watching the AI move, as with FOW off, i see where and what they have or haven't done, but as you wish to display that info, then yes leave it not ticked then[&o]

edited typo again[:(]

i'm sure i'm going daft in my old age and forgetful [X(][&o]

imo most will learn the game with easy mode on so ticked, as then you worry less about supply.

with mild winters on so ticked, so less cold, jumpers not ice and no movement later in the game for mostly the German side

and tick all the last boxes in the right had column, but then it plays mostly as a bog standard counter game, so doesn't show it off in a ARR, so leave all unticked maybe.

good luck and look forward to also seeing your results[&o] [&o][&o]

You are a newb to this game but seeing how you handle monsters such as WiF I don't consider you that type of newb. I don't have the game yet but Id venture to guess that the strongest part of the AI will be its depth and movements/reserves/buildups. With those exposed imo, i think it will hamper the ai too much for such a seasoned wargamer.

Granted, it would be great to see how the ai performs in its rear areas, I think it may just be too all knowing on your part. Id hate to think that people would be put off the game if it seemed too easy as imo those settings might be for people not used to wargaming in general.

Plus, there are many of us rooting against you. We have our favorites.

But its your vehicle. We're just along for the ride....and possible crash

My .02$

- Normal AI (good choice as it already quite challenging)
- Fast AI Speed (unless you have an older PC, I would set it at the slowest setting. It takes no more than 2 min per turn for me. Time well spent being alt-tabbed out and in the forum :-))
- Fog of War - OFF (keep the mystery and set it to ON. When OFF it becomes too easy to exploit penetrations)
- Hide AI Moves - OFF (as I recall, it slightly speeds up turn resolution, so not a big deal)
- Historical - ON (might help you counter the AI sligthly but for your first game it should not matter)
- Mild Winter - OFF (Good idea)
- Geneva Convention - OFF (Fine)
- Easy Mode - OFF (Definitely the right choice. Logistics is at the core of this game, and turning this on would remove a key selling point IMHO)

EDIT: Ninja´ed by OP by 24 seconds :)

Despite mo reb's kind words I am more at home on the water - the endless Russian Steppe is frankly frightening - assuming I can even negotiate the Pripyat Marshes....

So, after pressing Start what happens?

Well this appears.

normal AI difficulty wont make a great challenge and is based on learning only, not proper real or realistic move, so anything shown may be weaker than a above normal setting would be, turn AI think time to slow also give it a better chance of making a better move on normal and higher difficulty settings, or was in the beta[;)]

[8D]

but your game, your show, your rules, please just explain it's not the highest AI choices[8|][&o][&o][&o] which the AI can make ty, or not as again that's your call[8D]

The game is telling me that it's wise to choose a strategy and to check the Report Tab and specifically "Summonsed to Berlin".

OR

Ignore all that and get on with the game.

Well I want to understand what this is about, so I will travel to the capital to see my beloved Fuhrer.

This takes me to the main map.

Oooh I say - what a lot of divisions. Strangely, the Soviet units are all clear and the German units are kind of greyed out. No idea what that is all about but I'm sure I will find out.

I take a brief look at my forces in the north and recognise Ritter von Leeb's three army formations - 16th and 18th armies + the 4th Panzergruppe (Ahhhh memories of looking at my dear old dad's Purnell's Encyclopedia of the Second World War as a young kid + a bit of Eastern Front reading since).

And finally the largest and most important of the Army Groups. The task facing von Bock and Army Group Centre is colossal - not helped by the vast marsh land between it and Moscow that will make troop co-ordination an issue.
