Hexside Length

Post by Michael T »

@Vic

Why are your hexsides not equal in length?

I am trying to import a map that has hexes drawn with equal lengths on each of the six sides. That is 60 degrees for hex vertex angle. Why are yours not all 60 degrees? I have often wondered why?

Your hexes are stretched in the x plane.

I think I might be able to warp my source map.

But the question still stands. Why does your game have stretched hexes?

@Vic

I have a lot of questions in relation to a big scenario I want to build.

Should I air them here or better to email you directly?

I prefer to do all discussions publicly as others can profit by reading the discussions. :)

I would strongly recommend to any new scenario designer to the Community Project to start with something small to get to learn the ropes.

Writing a first book... a first game... a first painting... better best not to start with writing the encyclopedia britannica.... Skyrim... or doing a mural painting of 20x 10 meters :)

Same for scenario design.

As for the hex sizes. Its something of a anomaly that sort of stuck very early in my game design career. I think it was caused by me feeling that same width-height hexes looked distorted on early squary old monitors in 1024x768 resolution. The distortion is quite minimal anyways. And it does give the game a unique look :)

Best wishes,
Vic

That hex distortion creates an overall distortion in your map though. So distances in the x plane are closer in hexes as opposed to the 'real' distance.

For example lets say the actual distance between two cites in the x plane is 210Km. But your hex count between the two cites may well be only 5 hexes, which equates to 150km. The opposite effect for the y plane.

So to correct this one has to distort the source map, which then looks warped.

I may suggest this hex distortion is something you should look at correcting at some point. It will make the maps look better and they will be more accurate.

The distortion is in the range ~20%

The ratio of longest hexside to shortest hexside is 4:3
